Republicans are hoping Americans will support them in forcing President Barack Obama into a corner over his healthcare reform law, commonly called Obamacare, a law passed by Congress in 2010. The ultimatum: sign a 2014 continuing resolution that defunds Obamacare or veto it and be responsible for a government shutdown.
That's the essence of a piece Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio wrote for the conservative political blog RedState. Rubio and 11 other senators sent a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., last week, announcing they won't back a temporary appropriations bill come Sept. 30 if it funds the healthcare law. A similar push is under way in the House. Congress needs to pass a continuing resolution or a regular budget to fund government agencies next fiscal year in order to avert a shut down.
I didnt come to Washington to shut down the federal government; I came to help bring it back to its proper role, Rubio wrote. This role should create an environment where America is the easiest and best place in the world to create better paying jobs by starting a business or growing an existing one. One way to do that is by ending failed programs like ObamaCare that hurt our people, waste their money and scare businesses away from opening or growing.
Rubio said the September debate is the last best chance to defund the law as a condition for supporting a spending plan.
Defunding ObamaCare is a critical first step to preventing all this, and this September, we need the American people to stand with us in demanding that not another cent be spent on implementing ObamaCare, he said. At that point, the President will have a decision to make: sign it and keep the government open, or veto it and shut down the government. Thats the decision that should ultimately come to the Presidents desk.

Let the rest of us pilot it. Assholes.
The thing they hate worst about it is that workers can choose to tell them to stick it if they can afford subsidized insurance. I can go run a hotdog stand on the beach if I can afford healthcare. I can be an artist. Or keep working at that cafe where I love all the customers. I don't have to make all my choices based on their offering of crumbs. If I am underemployed, I can still be healthy. This is a new reality for many Americans that has not sunk in for us yet. They can't scare us with the specter of being sick and destitute. If we need it, very inexpensive insurance will be there for us.
It isn't perfect and maybe it will not help higher income workers that much, but it is a safety net we don't have now. So Rubio can go fuck himself.

(2,286 posts)It truly means freedom for millions. And once it is fully implemented, millions will realize it. There will be no turning back and a matter of time before universal care, just like every civilized country.

(46,585 posts)Government Shutdown Will Not Shut Down Obamacare, Says New CRS Report
excerpt:
WASHINGTON -- If the federal government shuts down, don't expect the implementation of Obamacare to stop. The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service issued a report on Monday stating that the law would still be in effect even if lawmakers hold up the functioning of the government over budget disputes. "It appears that substantial [Affordable Care Act] implementation might continue during a lapse in annual appropriations that resulted in a temporary government shutdown," the report says.

(24,689 posts)Obamacare is the law of the land, voted in by both chambers of congress, signed by the President and upheld by the Supreme Court. To throw it all away to stop a fiendish political threat would be absurd.
