Chris Christie-Rand Paul tiff on foreign policy reflects deep rift in GOP
In Congress, the divide between Team Christie and a more libertarian Team Paul was on display in the debate over the Amash amendment that sought to de-fund the NSA surveillance program.

The foreign policy tussle between Chris Christie and Rand Paul, two likely 2016 Republican presidential contenders, marks the most public flaring of a long-simmering debate between the GOPs long-time hawkish bent and the libertarian infusion the party has experienced in the last two election cycles.
When push comes to shove, do Republicans weigh in on the side of national security and foreign intervention or of privacy and greater international detachment? And which path will help grow a political party that even some of its leaders fear faces deep demographic challenges?
Of course, both Senator Paul (R) of Kentucky and New Jersey Governor Christie would argue their path does all those things they just strongly disagree about how to proceed.
<snip>
While the tiff is a spot of positioning between two presidential contenders at either end of a particular policy debate, its also an argument that reverberates deep down into the Republican Party.
In Congress, theres a stark divide between Team Christie and Team Paul.

(90,061 posts)I think that's what I see.
We have a Progressive-Paulist combination against the spying and the national party leadership of both parties favoring the status quo.
This really is starting to remind me of the late 60s & early 70s.

(17,656 posts)I can eat this up with a spoon all day, every day, for weeks on end.
The stupid detached-from-reality moron guests that were on Liar O'Reilly's program on Thursday night On Faux almost came to blows over discussing those two twits!!!
Oh, gawd, this is such a welcome surprise.
The Rethuglicans arguing amongst themselves like spolied brats sitting in the sandbox over who has more clout when talking about policies affecting foreign policy, national security, and who has more experience, years out from any kind of supposed imaginary national campaign!!!!
Watching those 2 mental midgets try to stake out their territory this far in advance of a political "mayne I'll run" situation almost 3 years away, is enormously entertaining.

(31,706 posts)...are going to be lots of fun to watch...just like going to a demolition derby...
Not only will we see a repeat of the clown car demolition derby we did last year but there's a whole bunch of new clowns to amuse us. Actually it'll be two demolitions this time around...one one side there's the Teabaggers and Paulbot Division with Cruz, Paul, Perry, Rubio and surely one or two yet unnamed and unhinged congresscritters. In the "establishment" division will be Christie, Jebbie, Rubio (yep, he'll play all side and then some) and maybe Huntsman...hoping that they can survive and split the difference like McCain and Rmoney did.
The divisions in the rushpublican party are very real and very deep...
Cheers...
