Quinnipiac Poll of Virginia: McAuliffe 43%-Cooch 39%; Same-Sex Marriage 50%-43%

Generally good news from Virginia, as the Q-Poll has Terry McAuliffe up over Crazy Ken Kookinelli for governor. It also has same-sex marriage supported by 50% of Virginians (Dems, Independents are strongly supportive) with 43% (mostly Republicans) opposed.

The fact that it's only 4 points speaks to how bad a candidate McAuliffe is. Arkana Jul 2013 #1

I wasn't any too enthusiastic about McAuliffe, but I was really unenthusiastic about Cuccinelli.

How easy or difficult will that be to overturn?

My friend just buried her wife. before she died, I helped to facilitate her getting married in DC. They were together for 30 yaers. They were married in Jamaica 28 years ago.

Her wife got sick, VERY sick. She was admitted to the VA MICU the beginning of April. In may I asked my friend if it would help her and her *partner* (something that virginia doesn't even recognize) got married. A friend put us in touch with Reverend Bonnie.

A few days later, in the hospital they were legally wed. A month later, her wife died.

This was before the SCOTUS DOMA decision. Her wife passed away 2 days before SCOTUS struck down parts of DOMA. I swear to you, it was the first time I saw a glimmer of hope after her passing.

Now a widow, my friend is fighting to keep her car, her house and her mortgage. She hasn't had time to grieve because Virginia law barely even considers them roommates in spite f being together for 30 years. It's not just Virginia law -- it banks not knowing what to do and even her lawyer. He's a good lawyer mind you, he just doesn't know where she and her estate stands.

The state constitution prohibits marriage between same-sex couples: “Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions. This Commonwealth and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage. Nor shall this Commonwealth or its political subdivisions create or recognize another union, partnership, or other legal status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage.” (Va. Const. Art. I, §15-A)

State statute prohibits marriage between same-sex couples, and purports to void “contractual rights created by” a marriage of a same-sex couple. See Virginia Code Annotated, §§ 20-45.2 and 20-45.3.

I'm just trying to be there for my friend. They were the first people to welcome us when we moved here in 2009. We all just bonded. I feel like I've known them forever.

I agree this is good news considering it's summer.

As someone said above, let's see what happens after labor day -- Right now I think Cooch is laying low and waiting to see what happens with the McDonnell problems.

We need to overturn the marriage equality ban in this state.

Someone somewhere is having fun and Cootch doesn't like it one bit.
