Questioning assumptions

As I saw the news story on the Utah Republican congressman challenging the concept compulsory public education, it occurred to me that this is perhaps what we are experiencing: a challenging of assumptions - ALL assumptions of our liberal Democratic republic since, oh say, the early 20th century.

Civil rights; worker protections; social safety net; compulsory public education.

Maybe it's a healthy thing for a country to check its assumptions from time to time...if only to reassert and solidify their soul.

NONE of those things grew out of a vacuum, especially things like civil rights and workers benefits.

Most of the founding fathers were behind public education IIRC. They may not have agreed to Federal participation, but Jefferson, at least was a huge proponent of free education. Hell he started UVA for that reason.
