Rove says: More White Votes Won't Save the GOP

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323873904578569480696746650.html

It is true that Mr. Romney would not have been elected if he only increased his percentage of Hispanic voters. Had he received 35% of the Latino vote instead of the 27% he did, Mr. Obama would still have won by roughly 4,083,340 votes. The upshot is that if Republicans hope to win the presidency in 2016, they need to do better with both white and Hispanic voters.

How much better? A higher turnout among whites (to 2008 levels) and a small increase in the GOP share of the white vote (say raising it 1% to 60%), along with a somewhat better performance among Latinos (say 35%), and Mr. Romney would have landed in the White House.

The reality is that the nonwhite share of the vote will keep growing. As the American Enterprise Institute's Henry Olsen pointed out in a recent speech, the nonwhite vote as a share of total voters has increased in every presidential election since 1996 by 2% (much of it Hispanic) while the share of the white vote has dropped by 2% each election.

If the GOP leaves nonwhite voters to the Democrats, then its margins in safe congressional districts and red states will dwindle—not overnight, but over years and decades.

This is why I think trying to go after white voters who vote against their own interests is a waste of time. Throw everything we've got at the Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and Indian population we can. Now I'm a black American - but I don't think in the next few years we will be a sure thing for the Democratic Party. The VRA's most important piece being struck down means that we will be the biggest and easiest targets as we are so solid for the Democratic party.

Knock me over with a feather - Rove said something factual. And I agreed with him.

If we can pull a victory at any level... Governor, Senate or Presidential in Florida or Texas - it becomes a giant trend for the country.

Why can't the Democrats just nominate a Hollywood Celebrity from Texas... just pick someone famous and run him or her... go the Ronald Reagan strategy... just pick a well known face. Throw millions at the campaign. Win at ALL COST.

Drive a spike through the heart.

I'd love to see the Dems throw some money this way. But it really needs to concentrate on local levels. That's how the GOP ingrained itself 3 to 4 decades ago.

They started in the churches (Tom Pauken for example).
They went for School Boards (the dumbing down)
They went for the City Councils (tax abatement)
They went for the State Legislators (ad nauseum)
Black Box elections (George W Bush)
Gerrymandering

etc.

ad hominen

Not necessarily in that order, but close.

If the GOP leaves nonwhite voters to the Democrats

As if nonwhites are passive game pieces? They're not being "left to" the Democratic party. Rather they are making a conscious decision that democratic policy aligns most closely with their own interests.

Since college and high school days, he has been playing politics. Not all older white people vote GOP.
Also angry people are motivated to vote, since the 2010 outcome. Now the tea party are alienating large segments of voters and they will take out their revenge by voting in large numbers for liberals.

6. Voting Against Their Interests Isn't Just A White Thing

Voting against their interests isn't just a white thing. Here in Texas we have far, far too many Latinos who either don't vote at all or vote for what they think is the most popular politician-- which unfortunately is still the Republican candidate.

I'm not talking about the gray and wrinkled survivors of the Civil Rights Movement. Nor am I talking about naturalized US citizens (with the exception of the elder Mr Cruz). THEY know what' at stake! I'm talking about the US-born, ( mostly) English-speaking Texas Latinos who have either disengaged themselves or treat elections like some bigger version of American Idol.

Texas Hispanics seem not to have noticed that they can defend their interest at the ballot box by electing reps who will look after their interests or firing the ones who work against them.

I would try to get the teabaggers in the texas legislature to pass a bill similar to Prop 187 in California. The passage of that referendum obliterated the republican party in California.

Notice this is a WSJ editorial. Corporate GOP will not support a Whites only political party. Given the make up of the country and their corporate here and abroad, corporations will not support a White, Christian-only party with xenophobic and anti-globalization agendas.

Not going to happen.

Out loud or in writing. But I think many black Democratic party members will tell you . . . Including myself - it already is a white only party. I mean - lets not pretend they have any use for us unless we are god damned fools. Think Cain and West.

But, there's a huge difference between implying it and outright stating it. To do so explicitly would marginalize the party in the media, and would invite boycotts and economic backlashes against those corporations that support it.

Globally, it would look very bad for any coporation to support a Whites only party.

it's just sad that that they're so obsessed with "winning" and having power that they not only accept the bigot vote but actively seek it. Anger, hate, and suffering are the only thing that they and their policies promote. Whatever flaws the Dems have, it's certainly not any of those things.

It's because Karl Rove wrote it. And his audience consists of people who can't make that distinction themselves. Shit - they would take one look at my husband and hear him talking to a sibling on his cell phone and say "papers please". . . . because you know - Italian and Costa Rican are the exact same thing.

I have to say on that point - aside from other travels - I've been to both Belize and Costa Rica in the past 14 months. We have immigrants from these countries in my community. You are making an excellent point here.

Our friend Alan is beyond a shadow of a doubt - a white man by APPEARANCE. He just happens to be Latino and from Costa Rica - now an American citizen.

My colleague Edsen - is also from Costa Rica - another now American Citizen - and he could be my brother.

Edsen is a foaming at the mouth Romney supporter - and Alan would rather anally rend and torture himself with a hot poker before he would ever vote for a Republican.

Thank God Rove 'knows it all'. Thank God. Because I think I can turn Edsen . . . he's already looking at Christie as suspect.

By alienating women with the war on women, the GOP is shrinking the white vote also. Democrats do not have to get large majorities of the white vote to win.
