- even when they were getting 2/3rds or more of the votes.

From what I have observed, the Democrats are smart enough to give Senators, like Markey, important must pass amendments that act to firm up their position in the next election. An example is that Menendez was the sponsor of the amendment to make the AMT tax correction - made every year - to keep many middle class and upper middle class people from being subject to the higher AMT tax. There were MANY people on the Finance committee who had argued for this (either for a given year or a permanent fix) in past years. Menendez was brand new to the Senate. Why do you think he was the sponsor for a bill that he could point to as having helped many NJ residents - many of whom are NOT the Democratic party base?

That and all Markey's accomplishments as a Congressman, the power of incumbency and blueness of Massachusetts. Not to mention, Brown's biggest asset is in its waning years. Not to mention, he was not graceful in the way he handled not wanting to run.

In fact, when he opted out there were already polls showing him essentially tied with Markey. This would have been a replay - only faster - than 2012. He was already claiming that Markey wasn't from Massachusetts, which didn't work for Gomez - and would have worked less well for him as he and Gail had a place down in the DC area and she had gotten a job with a TV station there. It is pretty obvious to sane people that this was pretty much the same thing.

It is curious that the Republicans argued that Markey was not from MA - when he born, raised, went to college there and has represented his home town's district for 37 years. They argued that Warren was from Oklahoma, though she had lived in MA for years - but no one is saying that of Gomez, who came to MA as an adult as well.

Not to mention, I wonder if this is poor strategy if he wants future support in the Republican party. He is saying that he could win - when it looks like Gomez won't. When Gomez loses, hasn't he assumed part of the blame for losing the seat? It is pretty tacky at any rate.

He simply does not understand that his election in 2010 was a fluke of circumstances. The healthcare reform debate had hit its low point, at least from the Democratic perspective. Jobs reports were gloomy. Voters were going through a good deal of buyer's remorse over President Obama. And his opponent ran a historically bad campaign.
Blend all that together, and presto: Sen. Scott Brown!
I'm still hoping he'll come up to NH next year and take on Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. She would clobber him.

There were DUers who did not want Kerry to take SOS because they thought Brown would win the seat.
