My colonoscopy shows why Obamacare is a fair compromise in a misinformed country where socialized medicine is still a feared and bad word. Single payer with cost controls is best.

(8,377 posts)My thought process was exactly the same as the author's. I didn't have a family history of colon cancer. As I entered the high risk decade, I put this off because it polyps were found the insurance company would have a motivation to try to cancel me -- or at least really jack up the rates. At that time, I was in my 18-month COBRA period and I just could not take the risk of discovering anything that would prevent me from getting my own policy.
I waited until I had my own policy in force to get the test. Here's the problem. Under ACA, colonoscopy screening is supposed to be covered 100% as a preventative measure. But the loophole is that if they can find anything wrong and take any action, they can declare it is not a screening and therefore not covered 100%. They did find some things to fix -- fortunately no cancer. But it this procedure ended up costing well over $2000 out of pocket -- with insurance. But at least they cannot cancel me as a result of this test now.

(12,543 posts)There will always be instances where it may fail someone, but it will never be perfect. I'm fortunate to has great coverage through my teamster union. I am glad that Obamacare is helping many at this time and eventually, whether some like it or not, will help all of those who need it the most.
