Related: About this forumEric Cantor: House GOP has Mitt-mentum
You can't make this stuff up.Despite hesitation from some conservatives about Mitt Romneys candidacy, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Thursday that House Republicans are excited about rallying behind the former Massachusetts governor in his bid to oust President Barack Obama.
Cantor, who endorsed Romney in advance of Virginias primaries in March, called the presumptive GOP nominee a true, results-driven conservative who will provide voters with a clear contrast in November against Obama.
Our conference is excited about coalescing behind Mitt Romney, Cantor told POLITICOs Mike Allen at the Playbook Breakfast. I think that Republicans, after having gone through a primary process thats been pretty rigorous I think were now at a point where members in our conference are satisfied that Mitt Romney is going to be a terrific candidate for us and are now getting behind his candidacy and his policies.
I want to be there to help Mitt Romney in any way we can because I believe Mitt Romney is going to be very helpful to our candidates in our House races across the country, Cantor added.

I suppose Eric wants to suggest "momentum", but that's just ludicrous.

(15,383 posts)It's relief that the primaries are essentially over. Now they have to move on to making Mitt electable, but there's no excitement to be had - whichever of the remaining 4 won, there was going to be tons of work in hiding their crazy (Paul, Santorum), making them seem human (Newt, Romney), etc. Now they at least know which way to take their game plan.

Excitement? Eh? Probably not so much. The establishment has been eager to have the primaries over for some time. Every time Romney had a good primary day, his surrogates and members of the establishment were quick to pronounce the primary over and encourage everybody to rally around Mitt but somebody- be it Santorum or Gingrich- kept hanging on if for no other reason than to spite the establishment. When Santorum, the most enduring conservative alternative to Romney- dropped out and Newt's checks dried up, it was clear to everybody that there was no real contest any longer and Mitt has all but been nominated at this point. Republicans are surely glad to have all that nastiness behind them. The base's acceptance of Romney doesn't seem complete, however, and he will still need to solidify their support, which will undoubtedly mean that he will have to do some more pandering to their "basest" instincts, which can only help President Obama IMHO.
