Obama lead over Romney down to four points: Reuters/Ipsos poll

Reuters) - Democratic President Barack Obama's lead over Mitt Romney has narrowed to 4 percentage points from 11 points a month ago, now that Romney has established himself as the likely Republican presidential nominee, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Obama was backed by 47 percent of registered voters in the telephone poll conducted from April 12-15, compared with 43 percent who supported Romney. In March, the poll had Obama leading Romney, 52 percent to 41 percent.

In what could be a sign of trouble for Obama, 53 percent of voters said that jobs and the economy were the most important issue in the presidential election, and Romney rated slightly higher than Obama on that issue.

Romney was seen as being a better choice to improve the economy and jobs by 45 percent of voters, while 43 percent favored Obama on the issue.

Only way I can square it with this:

ABC/Wash Post: Romney favorable 35%, unfavorable 47, first underwater nominee in 28 years.

note that the vast majority of the shift comes not from Romney rising but from a higher number of undecided voters.

WHAT are his credentials on the economy/jobs? WHAT is he promising to do that hasn't already been done by every Republican politician (and failed) during the past 30 years?

Obama has a large lead over Romney (CNN)
Obama has a small lead over Romney (Reuters)
Romney has a small lead over Obama (Gallup)

Can we stipulate that the polls are going to be all over the place for the next six months, and pledge not obsess over them?

They can't have Obama be so far ahead that the election becomes boring - where's the ad revenue in that? It's gotta be close, and the pollsters, who are chiefly paid by the media, will make sure to cook the numbers to make it close.
