how can we remain inspired?

I'm a 21 year old college student. I worked my ass off registering voters in south florida and raising money for Pres. Obama's re-election campaign. Personally I don't even think social security won't even be around by the time I'm eligible for it yet even I was appalled when Pres. Obama proposed the cuts that would certainly affect the current generation receiving social security

my first reaction was just anger towards the president- this was a guy who all of us liberals had helped get elected and it felt like he had sold us out

second was just utter puzzlement since this move made no sense politically- not only is he getting bashed by his own base but the republicans have flip flopped and turned out as the "defenders" of ss- an argument they will surely use in 2014 elections and who knows for how many more elections.....perhaps the Pres. is just a poor negotiator- i've always felt like he's misplayed his hand in past negotiations as well

third i was just sad- I'm not one of the disillusioned young folk who don't care about politics or what's going on with our country- thats why I had decided to take such an active role in the election.....Pres. Obama was someone who I believed in- with his re-election I was certain that finally our liberal agenda could be pursued......yet these recent events have just made me lose my faith in believing that we will truly ever have a TRUE liberal....if even a landslide electoral victory doesn't give our Pres the confidence to pursue our agenda then I don't know what will

i still like Pres. Obama- don't get me wrong.....its just I don't feel the same enthusiasm towards him or towards any of the upcoming elections- these proposed cuts were truly a back stab and a reminder that regardless of campaign speeches or late night talk show promises all politicians operate in a similar basis......personally its made me believe that our true liberal agenda will probably just remain a longtime dream that will never be fulfilled

Will SS be cut or saved? Will the hand wringing come true or turn out (like all the other times) to be hysterical nonsense. What about the motives of those doing the hand wringing? Some of them are legitimately worried, but some are just trying to suppress Democratic voting in 2014. Some just wanna gripe and nothing will meet their high pure standards.

I believe Obama and the Democrats will do the right thing. No one will stop me from voting straight D in 2014.

but I blame the attitude/behavior/policies of the Republican Tea Party to be the biggest reason that things aren't going better- or at least are being forced to move more slowly. To that end, I'd work on electing as many Democrats to Congress and state legislatures in the country. There are some bad apples in the Democratic cart but most of them want nothing to do with austerity and genuinely want to help people improve their lives.

As far as the CCPI proposal, President Obama offered it as a proposal that he hoped would lead to a bipartisan agreement on spending on taxes that would replace the sequester, as well as create more stability in the economy. On the merits, it seems like a bad plan but it seems relatively modest compared to the kind of stuff Republicans want to push through.

We are for the first time in many many years getting a bill to the floor on universal background checks. Thanks to the President and the bully Pulpit. Sure everybody was outraged after Sandy Hook, but it is this President that is not letting up the pressure to make change.
Unemployment keesp coming down, the economy is improving, the bush taxcuts for the millionaires were not renewed. We are getting comprehensive immigration reform, his budget makes sense. Even though you talk about the CPI like it means something to you, where in all actuality it could prolong the life and solvency of Social Security for 75 years. Along with other smart changes and corrections of course. If you do not stay inspired and come out and continue to support this president, his party and know that at the end of the day the democratic party is always the one party that looks out for the average person, we will have another 2010 in 2014.
And if we get a republican president in 2016....there will not be any Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. The healthcare will be turned back over to the private insurance companies. Your studentloan payments will go up again....I can go on and on
So get over it, and move forward. We cannot look back we have to move forward

can't enhance it but instead has to reduce it? Why is it you think they could make great changes they want, but we can't make our own? How can that be?
And you do our young friend a disservice when you imply that the CPI is applied only to retirement benefits, using the Chained CPI will hike tax rates and reduce or exclude such things as the Earned Income Credit to many working Americans at the lower end of the income range, many who make use of the Earned Income Credit are young people.
I'm sick of the thin rhetorical nonsense about this complex and important issue.
