Posted by Chris Cillizza on March 27, 2013 at 5:04 pm
Update: Ashley Judd has announced via Twitter that she will not run for Senate. After serious and thorough contemplation, I realize that my responsibilities & energy at this time need to be focused on my family, she wrote.
Actress Ashley Judd has decided not to pursue a bid for the Kentucky Senate race, according to two sources familiar with her decision.
A source close to Judd said that Secretary of State Allison Lundergan Grimes interest in potential race made the decision not to run easier. The timing just wasnt right, said the source.
Judds potential candidacy against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) drew national headlines. While she received encouragement from the likes of Kentucky Rep. John Yarmuth, other Democrats in the state expressed apprehension about her candidacy.
Democratic Senate strategists have argued that Judd would be a good, if unconventional candidate, pointing to her ability to rival or even eclipse McConnell in fundraising. But McConnells path to victory involves savaging his opponent, and Judds status as an actress and celebrity would have offered him loads of ammunition.

There are some good people in office, and I'm thinking of Sanders and Warren as two example, but they are rare.
If you don't think that such examples are rare, tell me who your other good politicians are.

(14,591 posts)Where is your evidence "the powers that be" is keeping her from running for office?
And again, it's insulting to Judd and women everywhere to make your assumption.
AnotherMcIntosh
(11,064 posts)Really?
Good to know. Thanks for your special insight.

(14,591 posts)The subject isn't who makes up "the powers that be", the subject is you making the claim those powers are blackmailing Judd to keep her from running.

I never said that anyone was blackmailing her.
You liar.

Among other things, Bill Clinton and other 3rd-Wayers were opposed to her being in the race. Someone took action to plant disinformation to kick her out of the race.

Period.

Tempest
(14,591 posts)By claiming she had something being held against her to keep her from running you are saying she has something desperate to hide.
That's insulting.
And to believe "the powers that be" will dictate what a strong intelligent woman decides is also insulting to Judd and women everywhere.
Not to mention it's tin foil hat stuff.

(14,591 posts)Your interpretation is not left up to debate. You made it clear. She's not running because someone is holding something over her head.
Insulting.
niyad
(113,552 posts)you on it is also insulting. "I wonder what they have on her" is NOT about "the powers that be" but a direct reference to her life and her behaviour. You go ahead and keep pretending. The rest of us here are not comprehension-challenged. Honestly, your remark was something I would expect from the other side.

She had as good a chance to unseat the Turtle as anyone, imho. But Bill and his team prefer someone more 'malleable'.
I don't believe for a second that pressure wasn't put on her to not run and Billy Bob was the applier.
This can be as true as any bullshit we read about. Makes more sense, actually.

(14,591 posts)"A source close to Judd said that Secretary of State Allison Lundergan Grimes interest in potential race made the decision not to run easier. "
She's stepping aside so another Democrat can run. A Democrat who is already in the state government and has a better chance of defeating the Turtle.
AnotherMcIntosh

Ashley Judd might have been. Some of us were hoping for that.

(14,591 posts)So you're admitting to not knowing much about Judd, but you're certain "the powers that be" are holding something over her head to keep her from running.
Here, this will help you get it right:

(11,064 posts)One of the things that really makes DU suck is the attribution of false statements to others.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)And as for what makes DU Suck ... perhaps the real cause of that could be the attribution of false or unproven motives to others.
I mean not that anyone on DU would ever suggest that Ashley Judd's motivation for not running for Senate would be anything different than what she has publicly stated as her motive.
