Tennessee lawmakers confuse mop sink for Muslim foot-washing sink

Sometimes a mop sink is just a mop sink. Building managers and legislative staffers have sought to reassure some concerned Tennessee lawmakers that recent renovations at the state Capitol did not install special facilities for Muslims to wash their feet before praying.

Senate Clerk Russell Humphrey said he had been approached by a House and Senate member to inquire about the sink, which replaced a utility sink that had been mounted higher on the wall and was used for filling and emptying buckets.

“There was concern about why it had been modified,” said Humphrey, who declined to identify the lawmakers or elaborate on their concerns.

Republican Sen. Bill Ketron, R-Murfreesboro, confirmed that he had spoken to Humphrey about whether there were religious reasons for the new sink after the issue was raised by Rep. Judd Matheny, R-Tullahoma.

Matheny and Ketron were the main sponsors of a 2011 bill that sought to make it a felony to follow some versions of the Islamic code known as Shariah law.

4. This mop sink is so practical it begs the question "WHY ASK"

I mean an old mop sink is waist high..and you have to lift it over the lip of the deep sink...then empty the old water and run the bucket around a fixed faucet.l..

This model, simply tip the bucket of old water into the sink...then place the bucket into the sink..and run the flexible tube around the bucket to rinse..then fill the bucket and lift it 5 inches instead of 3 feet...

6. Hey... You need to put that breaker box just a couple more feet closer to the running water.

What kind of code enforcement do they have in that state?

The breaker box and two access panels should be in the tub, not a foot or two away from it.

How do you expect to effectively electrocute the facility's workers?

Any licensed TN electricians who can explain why the sink is within 3 feet of the breaker box?
Most places that would be a big violation but it is TN so maybe the electrical code is ignored.
