Related: About this forumIt's evil to force you buy health insurance, but it's OK to force you to buy a gun?
When the author saw this he got a wee bit hacked off:

Let's call "Bullshit" on this notion, shall we?

(1,689 posts)yes it's a real law but no they have never forced anyone to buy a gun in that community. They did it as a knee jerk reaction to a community in IL that banned ownership of guns. More for publicity than anything else. I'm thinking this was about 20 years ago now. So I think you can turn your outrage meter off now. ( I looked back at the post and see it was 31 years ago, time flies)

(51,023 posts)objections to requiring people to buy health insurance. Which is exactly what the OP was saying.
And I don't see outrage here. I see a poster correctly pointing out some rank hypocrisy.

(16,201 posts)The second Act, passed May 8, 1792, provided for the organization of the state militias. It conscripted every "free able-bodied white male citizen" between the ages of 18 and 45 into a local militia company. Militia members were to arm themselves with a musket, bayonet and belt, two spare flints, a cartridge box with 24 bullets, and a knapsack. Men owning rifles were required to provide a powder horn, 1/4 pound of gunpowder, 20 rifle balls, a shooting pouch, and a knapsack.[5] Some occupations were exempt, such as congressmen, stagecoach drivers, and ferryboatmen. Otherwise, men were required to report for training twice a year, usually in the Spring and Fall.
This was in effect until the Militia Act of 1903 replaced the state militias with the National Guard.
This act came about because of a devastating defeat in 1791 while attempting to secure the modern day Ohio and the Midwest after the British had ceded the territory following the Revolutionary war. The Army was not well trained and was routed in the great lakes region by a Confederacy of native tribes twice. Since the nation did not have a standing army, it needed a well trained militia to fight for control of territory.
