Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) announced just before noon Wednesday on the Senate floor that he plans to speak for the next few hours in opposition to the nomination of John Brennan to lead the CIA.
Paul, who strongly opposes the Brennan nomination and the Obama administrations use of unmanned aerial drones, becomes the first senator to make use of the procedural tactic in more than two years and the first to do so since the Senate approved a bipartisan rules reform package in January.
I will speak until I can no longer speak, Paul said as he began his remarks. I will speak as long as it takes, until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important, that your rights to trial by jury are precious, that no American should be killed by a drone on American soil without first being charged with a crime, without first being found to be guilty by a court.
Pauls comments from the Senate floor come after he raised his objections to the drone policy Wednesday morning during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that included testimony from Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.

(13,992 posts)Now if he'd said, "I will speak until I can no longer speak intelligently" that might have been the shortest filibuster on record.

(11,464 posts)In WW2 they dealt well with traitors like the Pauls.
As they did in the founders time. Ask Benedict Ron Paul Arnold

(2,096 posts)Good. I'm raising hell on the telephone today. lol I'm calling Senators trying to get them on the floor of the Senate to join Senator Paul. He's not right often but this time he's spot on.

As Richard Clarke said "Drones are the most humane form of warfare even invented."
Rand Paul is akin to Jorg Haider.

(2,096 posts)No, I didn't vote for him. I'm not a Libertarian. I think they have wacko ideas about not having any regulations on business. On this issue, however, he is correct. I support people for their positions on the issues not because they have a D after their name. I usually don't support Republicans because they usually hold a position that is the opposite of my own. It used to be that my views and the Democrats positions were always in sync. Since Bush, sadly that is not the case. I don't give my support unconditionally. They have to earn my vote and my support.

Perhaps to stop Ashley Judd.
So what's your take on her? Any chance to beat Mitch?
Personally, I would rather she take down Rand, it would be highly ironic, given the Paul's views on women and minorities.

(2,096 posts)I'm sure he has many reasons for his filibuster but I support what he's saying and I think he believes in it. I get his email newsletter (I got on his newsletter because I went to his facebook page and criticized him and posted support for his civil liberties stance). He is not perfect on civil liberties issues but he's better than most of them.
I don't know about Judd. She doesn't live in Kentucky so she would certainly have to move to run for office. Mitch would probably attack her for being from Tennessee. The last polling I saw showed Mitch with dismal numbers. As always, it will depend on how the campaign in conducted. I'd love to see her get into the race. I certainly would love to see McConnell out of the Senate.

(838 posts)What does "Don't kill American citizens without trial" have to do with Pearl Harbor? Oh yes, FDR just DETAINED Americian citizens without trial because of the ancenstry. Perfect sense...

(838 posts)But let's be honest; if this crap had been pulled under the W administration...publicly stating the federal government has the power and legal protection to summarily execute American citizens on American soil without the benefit of due process, the clamoring for W's head on a pike from the liberal blogosphere would be deafening.
These are basic civil/consititutional rights that are being dismissed here.

(838 posts)But I'm trying not to shoot the messenger, no matter who repugnant I find him.
The idea of drones being "legally" used against American citizens on American soil stinks - no matter from whose administration it comes.

(297,323 posts)of shite. Did he even bother to read what AG Holder actually wrote?
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,415 posts)and his so-called "war on terror" but going after AQ and eliminating them post-9/11 wasn't one of them. I don't want this sort of thing happening on American soil (if anybody is actually talking about this) but I'm all for tracking down terrorists all around the world and capturing/killing them before they strike us (or our allies for that matter).

(2,096 posts)I'm glad that Senator Paul is filibustering this nomination. Just because he's a Republican doesn't mean that he can't be right sometimes. I only wish we had some Democratic Senators on the floor with him.

Because Thomas was a joke from the start. An insult to Marshall.

(3,335 posts)He was hoping to get the support of other tea baggers in the Senate. So far, not takers. I the bad weather we are experiencing here in NOVA makes it up to DC, he'll be done in time for supper. These people have no principles and he will not stay there past the end of the normal day. But the media needs to cooperate and not give him a platform to air his bullcrap grievances.

(2,096 posts)I don't think anyone should be banned for critical thinking. In fact, the world would be a whole lot better if there were more people who used critical thinking skills.

(838 posts)What's the point of moderating a democratic website if you can't ban dissenting opinions? I honestly don't know where some people get the nerve, trying to speak/write their mind....
