By Zack Beauchamp on Feb 22, 2013 at 1:30 pm
During the confirmation hearing for Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), Sen. Ted Cruz engaged in guilt-by-association tactics that reminded several observers (including this author) of former Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-WI)s baseless claim to have a list of Communists who had infiltrated the U.S. State Department.
It turns out Cruz was even more like McCarthy than previously thought. He believes that Marxists who believed in the Communists overthrowing the United States government have infiltrated the Harvard Law School faculty, outgunning the embattled campus conservatives.
Cruzs Communist comments came in a speech to the Koch-supported group Americans for Prosperity unearthed by The New Yorkers Jane Mayer. Mayer attended the speech, and wrote down the text of Cruz McCarthyite allegations, which also linked President Obama to the so-called revolutionary Marxists at Harvard:
Cruz greeted the audience jovially, but soon launched an impassioned attack on President Obama, whom he described as the most radical President ever to occupy the Oval Office. (I was covering the conference and kept the notes.)
He then went on to assert that Obama, who attended Harvard Law School four years ahead of him, would have made a perfect president of Harvard Law School. The reason, said Cruz, was that, There were fewer declared Republicans in the faculty when we were there than Communists! There was one Republican. But there were twelve who would say they were Marxists who believed in the Communists overthrowing the United States government.

(54,388 posts)He needs to be asked, by the press, by emails through his website, by calls to his office, by letters in the mail:
WHO are the communists that were at Harvard? WHAT allegations against Hagel is he making, and if none, why did he even insinuate that there might have been any substance to what he said during the hearings?
America needs to ask these questions of Cruz again and again and again and again until he either apologizes or admits in public that he indeed has, at long last, no sense of decency left.

(5,029 posts)According to Cruz's bio, his dad fought with Fidel Castro to free Cuba during the revolution in that country. Was his dad a communist?
DFW
(54,388 posts)In the beginning, Castro was just interesting in freeing Cuba from Batista. He was a huge fan of the USA while in Mexico preparing his revolution, stopping at the US outlets to check on baseball scores of US teams, etc. Only after he got the cold shoulder from the USA after winning the revolution did he turn to the Soviets and become "communist."

(5,029 posts)I'm saying put him on the defensive. If he can pull a McCarthy then he opens himself up to scrutiny and I don't think questions related to Cuba are untouchable.
I've also heard his parents came here illegally. Maybe he needs to be asked about that as well, since the GOP are so anti-immigrant.
like Ho Chi Minh. Was a nationalist before Truman snubbed him. Not wanting to piss off the French.

(36,437 posts)I'm mystified by why so many people are screaming "It's not true!." Even if it was true that there were more "Marxists" than conservatives at Harvard Law, so what? There's no political test for a faculty position anymore.
The charge is bizarre. The response is equally bizarre.

(5,756 posts)Much ado about nothing. We have had all types teach at universities and run for local, state and national office. There are no real enforceable prohibitions against being a Communist and being a professor or politician.
Some may mention the Communist Control Act of 1954 that, unfortunately, has never been repealed nor ruled on by the SCOTUS. However, I think any challenge to the law would be successful and the SOCTUS would most likely rule it violates the 1st Amendment provisions for freedom of speech and assembly. No, I'm not a lawyer so that's just my layperson's opinion. The fact that no one tries to enforce the law hints to me that no state government and none of the Feds want to waste their budget fighting a case through the courts because they have rightly concluded the law has little chance of standing.

Talk about being radical, he does not have a clue what a sane sensible Senators job consist of by his actions. He and Rand Paul, what failures.
