Arizona Lawmakers: Pregnancy Begins Before Conception

Arizona Abortion Bill: Legislators Pass Three Bills, Including One That Redefines When Life Begins

Arizona lawmakers gave final passage to three anti-abortion bills Tuesday afternoon, including one that declares pregnancies in the state begin two weeks before conception.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill to prohibit abortions after the 18th week of pregnancy; a bill to protect doctors from being sued if they withhold health information about a pregnancy that could cause a woman to seek an abortion; and a bill to mandate that how school curriculums address the topic of unwanted pregnancies.

The 18th week bill includes a new definition for when pregnancy begins. All of the bills passed the Senate and now head to Gov. Jan Brewer (R) for her signature or veto. Passage of the late-term abortion bill would give Arizona the earliest definition of late-term abortion in the country; most states use 20 weeks as a definition.

A sentence in the bill defines gestational age as "calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period of the pregnant woman," which would move the beginning of a pregnancy up two weeks prior to conception.

That was done by (D) legislators in other states in response to these ridiculous anti abortion bills.

Oh, wait a minute...someone did propose the idea in February! In jest, but still:

Democratic Oklahoma state Senator Constance Johnson has proposed a bill that would make it illegal for a man to ejaculate anywhere except into a woman’s sexual organs, giving an even more extreme twist to the current so-called “personhood” laws cropping up across conservative states.

does that mean she gets to remain pregnant for a whole month before she conceives again?
How many times does she get to do that?
What special benefits and privileges will she get to claim for being pregnant before conception?
Can she keep claiming government services and benefits if she doesn't conceive according to the law?

You just have to not let on that the women enjoy it any, or, god forbid, do it with anyone they aren't supposed to (like anyone they choose of their own free will). Aside from that minor detail, I think you have a right-wing economic program.

conceive two weeks after the start of her menstrual cycle..." ?

Anyway, interesting play on the timing.

The bad news: fertile women would be in a constant state of pregnancy, meaning she could never drink or take chemotherapy or have x-rays or other diagnostic medical tests or treatments.

In Arizona, now it's "Which came first, the conception or the pregnancy?"
