Essie Mae Washington-Williams, the mixed-race daughter of one-time segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond who kept her parentage secret for more than 70 years to avoid damaging his political career, has died. She was 87.
Vann Dozier of Leevys Funeral Home in Columbia, S.C., said Washington-Williams died Sunday. A cause of death was not given.
Washington-Williams was the daughter of Thurmond and his familys black maid. The identity of her famous father was rumored for decades in political circles and the black community.
But not until after the South Carolina Republican died in 2003 at age 100 did Washington-Williams come forward and say her father was the white man who ran for president on a segregationist platform and served in the U.S. Senate for more than 47 years.

(4,015 posts)It's hard to fathom, it really is.
Thurmond could have dedicated his political career to granting his daughter and her fellows in suffering the civil rights they had earned by birth, rather than spending his life on the opposite.
I'm convinced that all this race-and gay-baiting by republicans is primarily a function of their own secret desires that they feel guilty over. Why not just fuck the one you're truly attracted to instead of building a career on denying the very fact? Being liberal about these things is, at least psychologically speaking, healthier.
