Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is taking credit for defeating filibuster reform and preserving the GOPs ability to block legislation.
The Kentucky Republicans 2014 re-election campaign fired off a fundraising email to supporters after the finalization of the bipartisan rules change agreement, which passed Thursday night. The agreement negotiated by McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) leaves the 60-vote threshold in tact but speeds up the legislating process.
The email, subject line We Beat the Liberals, bragged that President Obama was furious after liberal senators and left-wing groups failed to pass their dangerous scheme to break down the checks and balances in the Senate.
You see, they had been pushing a plan to end the filibuster, allowing Harry Reid and the Obama Democrats to pass their agenda with a simple majority, wrote Jesse Benton, McConnells campaign manager. Well, Mitch McConnell stood strong and stopped that scheme dead in its tracks.

(333 posts)Reid just blew it and lost.
Bobby Jindal talked the other day about the GOP having to quit being "the stupid party", but many times, I think it's the Democrats who are the stupid party. The GOP is just the "Asshole Party", but the Democrats sometimes do shit that could cost them support and has me scratching my head like "WTF". Like what was Harry Reid thinking when he agreed to this deal keeping the 60-vote threshold? Democrats have just come off a big election win. Our side doesn't need to concede anything, so why is he doing this? He's not going to make the Rethugs more cooperative, but instead all Harry is doing is disappointing people on the Left and making some of them feel cynical.

(4 posts)I like Harry but oh my gosh, why was Harry appointed to do this job? What was Harry Reid thinking? He HAD to go with the 51 vote option, period. We will never be able to accomplish anything with the vote at 60, tried and proven. I feel devastated.
Mitch McConnell needs to be stopped from abusing the filibuster. Should they go back to the horrible talking filibuster to stop Mitch McConnell from killing bills in secret without any knowing, and without having to state reasons as to why? All he has to do is declare a filibuster and that is it. There needs to be some kind of disclose act on the floor to reveal the reasons, whys and wherefores to Congress and to the American people, not silent and secret objections. What needs to be mandatory is Accountability and transparency.
Bernie Sanders (I-VT) should have been appointed to go against McConnell. Bernie is stepping down this January, I am so sad, we need him so.

Welcome to DU, DemocracyIsGolden! It's great to have you with us!

I sure hope we take the house. Harry blowing this is unreal. I like your graphic at the bottom of your post. We can clean up this mess. I am so tired of obstructionists preventing us from paying our bills, improving the economy for jobs and moving on to actual progress. I sure hope they raise the taxes on the oil corporations up from 8.6%, that is highway robbery, they pollute the environment, give nothing back and get off with cheap taxes to boot.

(205,511 posts)But then everything he proposes seems to get so watered down that we rarely get what we really want. We know that the Republicans only goal was to make Obama a one-term president, but now that he won with a clear majority, they act like it never happened, are still pulling the same old crap. You're absolutely right. *sigh*
And I'm glad you like my graphic. It's what I believe and that's one big reason it's so frustrating. Bush* left us with so many serious problems and Obama only has four more years to clean a lot more of this mess up. I can't believe that so many of the obstructionists keep getting reelected, but the low information voters seem to comprise a majority out there. That's why I joined DU, since I learn something new - and important - here everyday.
