IMO, the chances of ANY firearm legislation being passed

is small, REAL small.

I know people are caught up in the moment (and it already has started to fade).

But, the issue is the House.

If EVERY democrat voted for something in the House, it is going to be hard to find the 20 or so republican's to get a simple majority in the House.

FURTHER, you will NOT get all the House democrats to sign on to ANY bill that limits in ANY WAY firearm possession in ANY way.

It is a LONG time until 2014, and any democrat in a close, dead split or Republican leaning district knows FULL well that by then the moment for this will have passed, and he or she WILL get beat over the head by 30 second tv and radio ads screaming about he or she ATTACKING GUN RIGHTS!

I think a conservative estimate on house democrats who would not touch ANY firearm legislation is 25 at least.

That means you have to find at least 50 republicans, 50 HOUSE republicans, who will vote for it.

These jackasses could not even pass their own BS, political showcase "Plan B" bill in the face of the FISCAL CLIFF hype.

Boehner could put it up and it has about a 1% chance of passing.

But, I question if he will put it up because while republicans will scream, but SOME DEMOCRATS did not vote for it, so it is not OUR FAULT, it still will lay at their feet that it won't pass.

So, he will get a lot of blowback not just by the House Clown Posse for allowing them to embarass themselves, but also establishment Rs.

I just don't get why people can't get just how bad this House of Representatives is.

It is clear as day to me, but it seems lost on the "liberal media" types and even a lot of democrats.

Krauthammer's ridiculous fantasy that the President is pulling some god father type maneuver to fracture the House republican's is part of a growing consensus within the conservawhore types like him and the actual Clown Posse to spend the next two years balling about how the President is being so mean to them and is just trying to make them look bad - the fall back republican position of playing the victim role when being jackasses.

LaPierre thinks its all about removing the lunatics and monsters that walk among us. They have a boogieman in mind and they think that RECORDS exist that would identify him.

Homeland Security, the FBI and Police Chiefs organizations always want more surveillance and more databases.

And all that's likely happening quietly, as Dems go along with modifications, extensions and expansions of post-911 powers of the police state.

5. Oh, yeah

VERY good chance just to get SOMETHING done, the push something through that imposes on the rights of the whole country.

THAT his how perverse things are in this country with the republican party at this point.

Even a good number of sensible gun owners are willing to accept some needed regulation at this point, but in order to not give even an INCH these jackasses will push through the kind of stuff you are talking about, or even the hair brained idea of requiring an armed guard in every school building.

I'll lay money on it not happening. Sure, some watered down legislation may get to the house floor but it will never be passed.

It had to be done immediately. We lost that chance and the crazy right wing has fortified defenses now. The GOP house members from gerrymandered districts would be challenged in the primaries if they vote for meaningful reform so they won't.

Sadly nothing will happen. Rinse and repeat.

the "fiscal cliff' drama and the holidays.

The momentum already is fading, and it will be all but gone when January actually starts.

I am skeptical that anything would have gotten done if it happened at a different time, but the House is going to get a bit of a pass for not doing anything because of the timing.

Correct but probably all but a half dozen imo;
.. as far as meaningful legislation, an assault rifle ban will likely collapse, since it's actually banning about one percent of the national gunstock, horrors; such the infringement on the intended 2ndA RKBA, when one single AR15 could've won the war in a month if possessed by either the british or george washington.

On the hi capacity ammo clips & the gunshow loophole (where background checks are sidestepped by private to private gunsellers & gunbuyers), a bit different, & it'll be interesting to hear how the gun lobby justifies keeping both those issues off the congressional table.
.. ie: we need the gunshow loophole because the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy able to buy a gun without a bg check?

That's why the senate must get rid of current filibuster and pass good laws. Like every month and let the people see these good laws die in the house. It's the ONLY way we take back the House !
