U.S. House candidate arrested for gun at airport dropping out

House candidate arrested for gun at airport dropping out

Democratic State Sen. Donne Trotter is dropping out of the Illinois special election to succeed former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday.

Trotter had been seen as a leading candidate in the race. But his campaign was hit hard earlier this month after he was arrested for trying to take a handgun through a security checkpoint at O’Hare Airport in Chicago. He told police the weapon was from his job as a security guard and that he forgot about it.

Trotter’s exit leaves a crowded field of candidates, including former Democratic Rep. Mel Reynolds, state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, and former state Rep. Will Burns.
The primary election is slated for Feb. 26. Democrats are expected to easily hold the Chicagoland seat.

He told police the weapon was from his job as a security guard and that he forgot about it.

As long as he's telling the truth here, give him the benny of the doubt, he's only human & if he's a security guard likely didn't have sinister intentions, nor a 'stupid' concealed gun carrier thinking he could save the day someday.
I have always opposed shall issue concealed carry, & supported 'may issue' where sheriffs & towns have discretion whether to issue a ccw license, based upon 'demonstrated need'. But doesn't mean I object to some people carrying guns. Not on planes true, but there's mitigating circumstances here for mr security guard.

On ccw, some may be surprised to know that, despite the general drop in violent crime rates nationwide the past 15 years or so, the only exceptions have been in shall issue ccw states (tho guncontrol state hawaii remained at parity - essentially the same no drop no rise).

1. PRO GUN montana enabled shall issue ccw 1991, since then her violent crime rate has tripled, now rests about two & a half times more than 1991 start year, never having gone below 1991 stats.
2. PRO GUN west virginia enabled shall issue & since, violent crime rate has doubled & remains over, never having gone below start year.
3. Both progun Dakotas enabled shall issue ccw & violent crime rates near doubled (tho still very low, amongst the lowest in the nation, due sparsely populated states).
4. Progun Pennsylvania (bluedog) enabled shall issue ccw 1989 & for 20 years had a higher violent crime rate than start year, rising as high as ~27% higher; in 2009 it finally slipped marginally below start year stats, but all the while rest of nation saw significant declines in v-crime rates.
5. Indiana goes above & below start year, think sine curve.
6. Florida took 5 years to drop below it's start year, but did parallel national decline thru 90's & 00's.

So don't buy into gunlobby crap that 'everywhere it goes, concealed carry lowers crime', cause it just ain't so.
MORE GUNS MORE LIES.
