2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA lurker no more....
I've been a lurker here for several years. I suppose I felt safe to do that and I had no real complaints since Obama was in office. That has all changed. When DU got hacked on November 8th, I took it as an omen for what was to come. I'm not an overly dramatic person and I'm even pretty optimistic most of the time - but this election has hit me to the core. I wake EVERY morning hoping it's a bad dream. I just cannot imagine how anyone could have voted for Trump. He's a narcissistic sociopath. This place, will now be my refuge. Help me understand how something so awful could happen. Thank you!

(9,600 posts)I agree! I am stunned.
I am just like you, it seems to me like there could not possibly be that many people that are willing to vote for Trump.
Oh well it is what it is,
Well welcome to DU
Heard a guy say he resonated more with America.
More people voted Hillary.
I understand the electoral college, but our country is insane if he got that many votes.

(40,416 posts)We'll try to help, but we're all in the same boat as you. Hopefully we will all come out okay if we stay together. That's my sincere hope for the future.
That Barack Obama intends to remain engaged will help quite a bit. We'll undoubtedly be seeing Michelle as well.
One thing for sure, Drumpf has stirred up a hornets' nest. Let's make his presidency a living Hell.

(25,364 posts)I'm very worried because he has the House, the Senate, the SC.
It will be a fight to keep him in check.
I'm also worried about the House and Senate passing legislation that Trump with rubber stamp. It is going to be a fight.

(23,926 posts)how in the Hell this happened, but I'm still at a loss to explain it myself. In any case, you'll find good people here, and sometimes it helps me just to be among them.
I hope the same holds true for you.

(42,641 posts)My take is twofold:
One, 41% of registered voters did not vote. So lack of enthusiasm for voting is a problem.
Two, Clinton has been victimized by the media for 30 years. Her so-called "negatives" were the result of this negative media coverage. And the corollary to number two is that Trump was the recipient of massive, mainly uncritical, media coverage.

(4,187 posts)A country so misogynistic that it does not even recognize its misogyny.
That's how something so awful could happen. Americans -- men and women -- hate strong, competent and intelligent women so much that they chose to destroy the country than accept being lead by a woman.
I, too, wake up feeling miserable every morning. I had never realized that I was a second-class citizen. I thought those days were in the past. Now, I see it all very clearly, and all my previous experiences with sexism in the workplace make a lot of sense. I am devastated.
