2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRemeber Susan Sarandon? She would like to reach out in a dialogue to those who voted for trump
and not make a blanket judgement of them?
Sarandon recently tweeted that the left needs to reach out in dialogue to those who voted 4 him. We cant afford a blanket judgement of them. We need allies in that camp.
https://twitter.com/kurteichenwald/status/798591389000822784
I think Debra Messing said it best:
Isn't that special, "she wants to give a racist, islamophobic, homophobic, sexist a chance"
Perhaps .Sarandon can invite Jeff Session, Steve Bannon, and David Duke over for high tea while she is at it

(92,204 posts)Hillary lost Michigan by .3%. Jill Stein received 1.1% of the vote. Same thing in Wisconsin, and other critical states
and as far as you hypothetical Sanders assertion, Russ Feingold, Zypher Teachout, Jane Kim, and Loretta lost, as did every swing state Senate race against the establishment, incumbent republican.
Should have listened to her? Don't make me laugh. She won't be hurt by a trump presidency, with her many millions of dollars
It is Women's rights, Civil Rights, Environmental rights, and whole groups of people that will suffer because of those actions.
She can go to hell

(1,499 posts)listening to Hillary apologists blame everybody BUT her campaign for what happened (including black, brown, and wwc democratic voters who didn't turn out in the numbers they thought they should), you are 100% right about the "I told you so"-ers. Bernie would have never faced Trump because Trump's anti-establishment spiel only attracted GOPers b/c it gored Hillary. He would have faced a Rubio or a Bush . . . or, as you suggest, a Bloomberg. I campaigned for Bernie until Hillary was nominated (and then canvassed and phone banked for her) and even I say this stuff about how we should have listened to Sarandon, who stabbed Bernie in the back, makes me sick.

(135,425 posts)A candidate over eighty, and a candidate over seventy? Both lightning rods and divisive?
Nope. This is just not going to happen.
Besides, Sanders after affiliating with us as a Democratic candidate, has, following the conclusion of the primary, left the Democratic Party, and put the "I" after his name once again. Formally. He made a statement to the effect that he was elected as an independent and that is how he was going to continue to serve. He caucuses with us, and that's fine, and he has an "outreach" position which is more of a title than an actual leadership/decision-making gig, but he is an adjunct, not a member, of our party--by HIS choice.
Plus, they're too far to the left for the bulk of the party. The Democratic Party is a BIG tent, and it includes centrists/moderates and yes, even conservative Democrats. Sanders does not appeal to that segment of the party at all; in fact, many continue to blame him for the fractures on the left. He will likely never get past all that.

(135,425 posts)HE had no power to do diddly. He would have to get Congress to sign off on that expenditure, but I doubt they'd leap to accommodate that.
Remember, Hillary Clinton wanted UNIVERSAL health care in the 90s.
Things move slowly in DC.
He was trying to get the votes of college kids, who apparently don't understand that they'd be writing a LOT of those loan payback checks and possibly paying off their loans before we as a nation ever see this.

(18,124 posts)Sanders was a viable alternative to HRC, just would have ended up like HRC surprisingly defeated. The polls all said she had it in the bag, the lying stealth racist voters made a difference, I think. The Comey stab in the back. The bromance between Putin, Comey and the trumpfuhrer played a media downplayed huge role in this election and the fraud that it is turning out to be. I am still reeling, yet all that is left is fight the scandal laden Powers That Be. Hopefully our Party's leadership will step up and lead.

(10,718 posts)I'm in favor. The problem of people living inside little information boxes is a real thing, and in my right-leaning town its very common to hear people in discussion speaking of "liberals" as nutjobs and slackers who have no idea how things really work.
The opposite is the case; most of my politics is based on the core principles of the constitution, the idea of essential equality, and the government's responsibility to uphold the law. I never have a problem engaging with people in real discussion. It doesn't happen often enough (very busy schedule), but its a good thing when it does.

(83,785 posts)There is no dialogue with racists. They are also sexist and want to take back every dayum thing we have earned. Why the hell did we have to earn anything? We are human beings and deserve the same rights as any man.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)And some might be unreachable. I recognize this, but I hope people will at least make an effort to educate them.
And I do not know that a majority want to take back what has been earned. I think some are acting out of fear. They are afraid of change and afraid of difference.
The worst part of this is that Trump has attempted to normalize predatory behavior.

(92,204 posts)and David Duke make that very clear
The 27% that voted for trump, not coincidentally, is very similar to the same number in the U.S. who believes that President Obama is not an American
and her previous bits of wisdom before the election was how Hillary was more dangerous than trump.
She is an extremely rich person, who won't be touched by the results of this election, while others suffer
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)But making blanket generalizations is not generally a good practice.

(92,204 posts)trump supporters do indicate not every trump supporter has racist inclinations, the polls do indicate that the majority of trump supporters do have racist tendencies.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)And even if I accept that a majority, or a significant plurality, of Trump supporters have racist tendencies, can they be reached? Assuming that Trump won the election with 24% of the vote, and further assuming that 1/2 of these voters are racist, can 12% of the voting population really be ignored?

guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)that would mean that somehow the Democratic party must motivate a large number of the 41% of registered non-voters to vote for the Democrats.
Which begs the question:
If Clinton's campaign did not motivate 41% of these non-participants, what is missing in the message?

I disagree because people feel that they are voting in their own best interests. Lack of information and/or education might make them unable to recognize what truly serves their interests, and by extension the interests of the majority.

(12,448 posts)no matter how hard you try. The racists, homophobes, misogynists, xenophobics, religious fundamentalists live in their own bubble. It does not matter how you "reach out" to them. It does not matter how much evidence, good sense, etc. etc. you present; they don't care.

(1,107 posts)Long read but very good some highlights:
"Democrats failed to understand white, working class, fly-over America. Trump supports are saying this. Progressive pundits are saying this. Talking heads across all forms of the media are saying this. Even some Democratic leaders are saying this. It doesnt matter how many people say it, it is complete bullshit. It is an intellectual/linguistic sleight of hand meant to throw attention away from the real problem. The real problem isnt east coast elites dont understand or care about rural America. The real problem is rural America doesnt understand the causes of their own situations and fears and they have shown no interest in finding out."
"Education is the enemy of fundamentalism because fundamentalism, by its very nature, is not built on facts. The fundamentalists I grew up around arent anti-education. They want their kids to know how to read and write. They are anti-quality, in-depth, broad, specialized education. Learning is only valued up to the certain point. "
"Because rural, Christian, white Americans will not listen to educated arguments, supported by facts that go against their fundamentalist belief systems from outsiders, any change must come from within. Internal change in these systems does happen, but it happens infrequently and it always lags far behind reality. This is why they fear change so much. They arent used to it."
"Another major problem with closed-off, fundamentalist belief systems is they are very susceptible to propaganda. All belief systems are to some extent, but fundamentalist systems even more so because there are no checks and balances. If bad information gets in, it doesnt get out and because there are no internal mechanisms to guard against it, it usually ends up very damaging to the whole."Without built-in protective functions like critical analysis, self-reflection, openness to counter-evidence, willingness to re-evaluate any and all beliefs, etc., bad information in a closed-off system ends up doing massive damage in short period of time. What has happened to too many fundamentalist belief systems is damaging information has been allowed in from people who have been granted expert status. If someone is allowed into a closed-off system and their information is deemed acceptable, anything they say will readily be accepted and become gospel".

Edited to add: I keep thinking of a John Oliver segment from weeks ago about bring "feelings" to a "fact" fight. I have no doubt rural America "feels" like it lost it's way of life and that Trump can solve it for them. This will not change the facts of that the Trumpadministrationn care one wit about their economic interest and is going to decimate rural and working class that voted for him disproportionately.

(3,251 posts)They are susceptible to propaganda, which is why the media pimping for Trump is so outrageous.
We really should just let them wither away.
Along those lines, Richard Hofstadter's famous essay "The Paranoid Style in American Politics" is as true today as it was back in 1964:

I'm really tired of Sarandon. I prefer how Van Jones sees things and expressing how we get back on our feet...and how we have to change the hearts of trump voters. We can't really do that if we don't try to understand.
We can achieve all things through understanding.
