2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumUPDATE: to my previous thread about conservative hubby voting straight Dem.
He told me yesterday he is DONE with Republicans. Their game playing and grandstanding have completely disgusted him. He still can't believe they are crazy enough to shut down the government, kill good legislation with bad amendments, or can refuse to vote on a SCOTUS nominee.
I'm gonna have to stop calling him conservative. He's decidedly moderate now. Was a Hillary fan at the beginning of the Primaries before I sold him on Bernie, so he is very happy with our nominee, if not the way the election has been conducted on the repub/media end.

(58,785 posts)Sounds like, as so many were, he moved farther right with the party than would be natural for him, but he's still conservative and that'll be fine as long as he's a principled, fairly MODERATE conservative who rejects what the hard-cores and extremists running the party are up to.
I'm glad for both of you that he is one of those for whom this election is sparking an epiphany. Our nation needs all the sensible, aware conservatives it can get. Every one is precious to democracy.

We really need some definition changes in this country. Conservatives save things, move forward but slowly and cautiously, look for the best ways to purchase and invest and see war as only a last resort. Doesn't sound like any Republican of today.
But it does sound like some parts of the democratic party. Nothing wrong with that.

(47,613 posts)The people we call conservative today are extremists. My high school social science teacher would have called them "reactionaries". My father was a conservative republican, but looking back, he was more liberal than a lot of Democratic politicians today. This was before republicans started wooing Christian fundamentalists to get more votes. I think it was all down hill from there.
Having a balance of conservative, moderate, and liberal representation in government is healthy. Tea Party and Freedom caucus politicians are not!
I'm so glad your husband is voting Democratic. It must make your life much more pleasant.

(13,452 posts)Many Democrats like single-payer health care over health care insurance providers. Why? Because it is cheaper with better outcomes as seen in many other countries. Single-payer is really a conservative value, small-c conservative value, i.e. actually conservative conservative value. Single-payer conserves our individual held wealth and individual health. Yes, it increases the size of government. When such an increase in government makes our necessities less taxing on our personal wealth and at the same time less taxing on our health, it sounds like a good reason for government to get bigger.

(1,829 posts)this is a lady who once said "I really love Dick Cheney. He does such a great job" and watched Fox News on the regular.
No more. Bernie, of all people, is who started to turn her. She likes that he says the same things now he's been saying his whole elected career and hasnt changed. And no BS.
She threw herself behind Hillary because they are close to the same age and MIL can relate to and respect the enormous amounts of shit Hillary has gone through.
And she LOATHES Trump.
She even texted me the other night to say she is voting straight ticket Dem for the rest of her life and can't wait for every single repub to go down on Tuesday. We are in extreme red SW MO, so this is a big deal for her to change her thinking on this.
