"Remember when" thread for older DU people.

Remember when Eisenhower said something like "calm down and have a Coke" and people went nuts because he used a brand name? Now we have a candidate who says 'f**k" and "p***y" and likes to think he IS a brand name.

Remember when people said Rockefeller couldn't be elected because he'd been divorced? Now we have a guy on his third marriage running for President.

Please add memories.

and I was reminded again of the divide within the Republican Party with Joseph McCarthy and his attacks upon Truman/Ike military and State Department-the evil strain of the Republican Party was alive and well even back then

You really want to get a great perspective on Trump do a google search for the American Experience 2 part series on George Wallace called "Setting the Woods on Fire". Trump=Wallace. I was glad I watched it even though Wallace for most of his life was a repulsive figure to me

18. As a woman I remember
Sun Nov 6, 2016, 12:51 PM
Nov 2016

My 101 year old mother telling me she was born before women could vote. She will vote this year.
My mother working for years in an office teaching young male executives how to do the job and never getting promoted herself because she was a woman and should know her place.
Traveling through VA in 1960, stopping at a little restaurant out in the country and seeing a "white's only" sign on the door. When I entered I could see through to the kitchen and saw that the cook was black. The woman could cook my food, but not come out and sit down and eat in that establishment. I had never seen this before and it made me feel ashamed,.
Job listings posted as Help Wanted - Male and Help Wanted -Female.
As a married woman not being able to have a checking account in my own name.
Not being able to get my tubes tied at age 29 with six children because I was "too healthy"; if I was 35 they might consider it. (This was in NYC in 1969). Finally succeeded in 1979 in WV.
Being encouraged to be a teacher, or nurse or secretary because being a doctor, lawyer, and business executive were jobs for men only.
Moving from NY to WV and finding myself surrounded by male chauvinists whose idea of a woman's place was to "keep her barefoot and pregnant".
Trying to prepare my daughter's to make their own place in the world and be all that they could be. All five of my girls have college degrees and are professional women.
Thinking that the country was progressing and I would be leaving the country in a better place for my children and grandchildren. Now I am in a constant state of anxiety waiting for the outcome of this election. I was a Bernie supporter, but now I am praying that Hillary wins. But I do not think the "Trump effect" will go away any time soon, and that scares me more than any foreign terrorist.

My boss asking if I was pregnant before he gave me a job promotion...
No sports for girls in school until Title IX was passed in 1972...
Male teachers saying "You'll make someone a great wife" when your notebooks were precise and well-organized...

It seems like we have come so far, but this election has been a very painful reminder of how much blatant sexism and racism still exists in our society. It hurts. Let's get the vote out for Hillary on Tuesday!
