2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumComey knows a lot about what is going on.
He knows as much as Harry Reid or David Corn about the Russian connection to Donald Trump.
I have been very critical of him for his ambiguous political maneuvering. I was critical of him when he put Hillary Clinton under a cloud with his testimony before Congress back in July.
But, why did the President come out and support Director Comey as a man of "integrity" after this last explosive controversy? I respect the President's opinions.
Could it be there is more going on with the FBI than what we see on the surface? Perhaps the President has been informed but Hillary Clinton has not?
And why would the FBI Director disagree with the CIA and Homeland Security chiefs about releasing the emails on Anthony Weiner's computer? Is it possible that the FBI is investigating something in its own jurisdiction and he has decided to go it alone, with the knowledge of the President?
I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Is there more to the story than we know at this moment?

(3,745 posts)The white house press secretary answered questions at a press conference yesterday. He refrained from personally attacking Comey but made it quite clear that FBI protocol has not been followed. I watched the press conference and I certainly did not come away with the impression that President Obama was happy with Comey.

(19,982 posts)Comey would have had to resign there and then, and the Repubs would have dived in blaming Obama for driving Comey out to protect Clinton, claiming a cover up. A land mine avoided.

(2,495 posts)His press secretary made it as clear as he could without being direct about it. He made it clear that Obama strongly supports the norms and rules Comey violated, and that he doesn't think the prerogatives of Congress outweigh the reasons those norms are in place. The reporters themselves noticed the disconnect between that strong support and his unwillingness to condemn Comey and pushed him on it a bit but then he just fell back on saying they would neither defend nor condemn.

(798 posts)I have considered that Comey may have put the Clinton bogus "new emails" story out so that the Trump-Russia connection COULD be leaked before the election. Just a thought. After all, it was righteous indignation from Dems in Congress and the Clinton campaign on the so-called "double standard" of the FBI that led to the Trump-Russia investigation going viral.

It makes no sense whatsoever to suggest that letter about emails has anything to do with that.

(111,110 posts)and it may be premature to make it public at this time? A possibility, I guess?

(44,974 posts)What does email story has to do with leaking of possible Trump-Russia connection?
TrishaJ
(798 posts)investigation out before the election. Comey did not leak that story. It came out from multiple sources - beginning with Harry Reid's letter - AFTER the Republicans pounced on Comey's vague letter about "new emails" may or may not have significance. Either he is the dumbest, most incompetent partisan to sit at the head of a key government agency, or he purposely "set the table" for release of more details on Trump and Russia.

(798 posts)read this? That's really good news if the FBI is saying there is nothing to Trump and his ties with Russia. Is there a link to a source for the FBI leaking that there is no investigation on this? Much appreciated.

(30,481 posts)Look at what Obama's top people are saying. You think it is all being done without Obama's blessing. Obama isn't some tag-along who has no coordinating skills.
Obama is the adult in the room providing words of stability in a highly unstable environment. At the same time, his people are rightfully drawing a narrative.
"Is there more to the story than we know at this moment? "
Of course there is. That is one of the biggest failures of what Comey has done.
