Christie as Rock Star Has Republicans Set to Ride Wave
By Terrence Dopp - Nov 28, 2012 5:00 AM CT.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, the outspoken Republican, would beat all likely challengers if a vote for his re-election were held tomorrow, according to a new poll. Still, that wont ensure an easy win next November.
Democrats hold a 3-2 edge among registered voters. The state hasnt elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1972 and went for the Democrat in the past six presidential votes. Christies 2009 ouster of Democrat Jon Corzine was the first time a Republican won the governors office since 1997.
Yet riding a wave of goodwill from his handling of storm damage from Sandy, Christie led his nearest potential Democratic challenger, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, 53 percent to 35 percent, a survey released today by Quinnipiac University shows. Maurice Carroll, director of the schools polling institute, said the governor has a strong position heading into an election year.
In New Jersey, voters make us work for our victories, said Assemblyman Declan OScanlon, a Republican from Little Silver who described the governors recent approval ratings as rock star numbers.

The right: "You're fat! Hehehehe."
Glad to see we take the higher road and all that.

(63,912 posts)I wonder how much the man's heart can take. However, he is still young and it may be possible for him to reduce his weight. If not, I see his obesity as life-threatening, so I wonder what kind of a political future (or a future at all) he can have...

(31,464 posts)Sure, we can use humor now. But "what if?" This man is seriously unhealthily. If he were to be President, we can't worry about being "politically correct" regarding "fat people." This mans is morbidly obese. It is an election issue. Fuck his personality...what about his life expectancy? If Christie runs, you might as well just vote for the VP...this man is a train wreck.

(4,062 posts)Frankly, bottom lining your initial AND second arguments ("he's fat and that's funny" and the well considered "Fuck his personality .... he's fat and that's unhealthy" , it's hard to escape the conclusion that you pretty much haven't ruled out an endorsement of Paul "Grandma's Marathon" Ryan in 2016 yet.
But by all means, let's use the same criteria as the election for prom queen as our first and second arguments about suitability for public office. Why should the MSM get to have all the fun here?

(63,912 posts)We get information all the time on the ill effects of obesity. We have been told over and over that it is a national health epidemic.
Let's just say "we have been warned."

(31,464 posts)NO ONE who weighs 400 lbs is "healthy." No way to spin this. Chris Cristie is NOT healthy.

Things can change in politics. However, if the national economy keeps improving and NJ improves along with it, I think he'll be tough to beat.

(11,607 posts)I was going to say the same thing. Hopefully once the 2013 campaign begins in earnest Christie's approval rating will drop, once he has an opponent who can criticize his policies.
Most people will probably still approve of the job Christie did handling Sandy, but hopefully they can be reminded of the other policies he has pursued, like his attack on teachers and cutting the state's affordable housing funding, trying to roll back what has been the greatest progress on affordable housing of any state in the country.
I admit, I have a more favorable opinion of Christie as a person and I guess as a governor since the storm. But I still can't vote for him because of his stances on issues that are important to me. Hopefully as people are reminded of these things he won't be riding so high anymore.
Pholus
(4,062 posts)He broke from the party orthodoxy when his state needed him. That puts him in the upper 1% of Republicans.
That's still worse than 150% of the Democrats for all of the other issues.

(8,759 posts)Christie has a boost because, and this is a real shocker to the right, he acted like a governor of a state and stood up for his people -- all of them! Unlike Perry and Jindal. So he's popular in New Jersey, he should be. And so he has a good vibe nationally for not being a partisan fuck head when his state was under water.
But I fail to see how this translates into a 'wave' for the GOP when they're just doubling down on the conspiracy theories and scaring the hell out of every immigrant, minority and female in the nation.

(31,464 posts)Being 'the wave' now is actually a curse of death for Christie. The momentum will be lost long before the next election season starts.

(801 posts)a moderate republican? What are his stances on abortion, entitlements and other social issues? I wouldn't vote for him if he is pro-life. Still too many radical republicans in Congress that MIGHT write a bill restricting or outlawing abortion and someone who is pro-life MIGHT very well sign it.
