In Secret Documents, Anti-Gay Marriage Group Looked To Divide Gays, Blacks

The leading opponents of same-sex marriage planned to defeat campaigns for gay marriage by "fanning the hostility" between black voters from gay voters and by casting President Obama as a radical foe of marriage, according to confidential documents made public in a Maine court today.

The documents, circulated by the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign, are marked "confidential" and detail the internal strategy of the National Organization for Marriage.

“The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks—two key Democratic constituencies," says an internal report on 2008 and 2009 campaigns, in a section titled the "Not A Civil Right Project."

NOM was just another facet of the GOP "divide and conquer" plan...it has nothing to do with marriage and everything to do with political power.

Many here, and throughout the FDLs and Huffpos, walked right into this, to where wounds still fester.

It was all too common.

I'm gay, but I feel no solidarity with those gay people (especially gay men) that see "gay rights" merely as getting a piece of the existing pie, instead of being one part of a bigger fight for human freedom.

This is straight out of the republican play book. Slice and dice people to divide and conquer. They create multiple astroturf organizations and quasi-religious fronts to accomplish their goals. I'm hoping that people are starting to get wise to their MO and will understand that none of their supposed concerns over values are real - it's done for the very worst of reasons, a cynicial use of all important values to foster hate and distrust among different segments of our population. Contraception, abortion, sexuality, immigration, minorities, labor, science - these "wars" are designed for one purpose only...keeping the bottom 90% from taking control back in our government.

Today HRC got a hold of internal NOM documents that shed light on the anti-LGBT movement’s overall strategy. These documents were just unsealed in Maine mid-afternoon. The docs are part of the ongoing investigation by the State of Maine into the campaign finance activities of NOM in that state. Much more to come but some high (low) lights from PDF page 13 of the “confidential” 2008-09 report to the NOM Board of Directors:
