Related: About this forumNo, President Obama should NOT fire Comey
Some people on here have suggested that President Obama should fire Comey. While I agree that what Comey did seems inappropriate, at least without giving more detail, firing him is the worst thing the president could possibly do. Republicans and the media would scream that he obstructed justice to protect Hillary, it would cast doubt on any subsequent revelations from the FBI that it's not nearly as bad as it's being made out to be, and it would not only hurt Hillary but it would destroy the president's credibility too, and with it his ability to help downballot candidates. Any official intervention by the president would be like throwing oil on a gas fire. It would be the Saturday Night Massacre 2.0.
The best thing the president can do for Hillary now is open up about how she came to earn his trust and offer a strong character endorsement, stronger than he has to date. He has been a great surrogate but he has mostly focused on her qualifications. I think he could give her a boost by vouching for her character and trustworthiness. And that would help her a lot more than getting anywhere near the FBI shenanigans.

Despicable.

(11,605 posts)For the millionth time, I don't post at JPR.
My post was a suggestion for how the president can help Hillary. I challenge you to find a post at JPR that does that.

(36,437 posts)and is to attack Obama in the bargain, a pure trope straight out of JPR.
It is a disgusting and dishonest tactic, and transparent as all fuck.
Like I said, despicable.

(11,605 posts)You've been sniping at all of my posts for months accusing me of not supporting Hillary enough, but this is a new level of ridiculous. Check out the twitter feed for #RepealThe22nd and you'll see that more than half the tweets are mine. The only reason I don't push that more here is to avoid rehashing the 2008 primaries. But trust me, I'd vote for Obama again in a heartbeat if I could.
I think he has been very supportive and a great surrogate for Hillary. But now that the GOP and the media have managed to manufacture another "scandal" about her and her character is under fire again, I think President Obama could help by talking about how he personally came to trust her, as I am sure he did. Is that wording better?

(5,300 posts)Now, he can't. But I do like the idea of "accepting his resignation" on November 9th.

(68,868 posts)Comey can't serve as FBI director under Clinton. No one trusts his judgment, or his motives.
He's already shown himself to be a puppet of Jason freaking Chaffetz.

(1,999 posts)Comey can't be allowed to continue abusing his power with impunity just because Republicans would say firing him was political.

(17,135 posts)Give Comey notice that he has a meeting in the White House, 7:30 in the morning on the Monday following the election. Make it a one-minute meeting where Obama offers to accept Comey's resignation. Done.
He'll have all weekend to worry and fret.

But, for the reason you note, unfortunately BHO and Lynch need to stay out of it until November 9th.
