Its said that when you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. Well, it looks like the GOP has now coined a new truism of the canine variety: When you support a rabid dog, you wind up foaming at the mouth.
I remember the early days of Trumps campaign, when Republicans struggled to un-do the damage every time the Tangerine Nightmare opened his mouth. They invariably described his insults of women, minorities, the disabled, et al as inartfully expressed, less than eloquent, and poorly phrased. Overnight, they turned themselves into interpreters, translating their nominees outrageous, hate-filled spew into merely an expression of sincere concern for the nation and its well-being as expressed by a politically naive man unused to polishing his turds before presenting them for public consumption.
Even as the grab their pussies tape hit the airwaves, the Republicans dismissed it as locker room talk, reducing its clearly misogynist intent as merely being naughty language that menfolk indulge in all in good fun, of course.
But in the aftermath of the should-have-been-expected outrage, the GOP apparently decided that if you cant beat em, you can always join em and they have done so with enthusiasm rather than shame.
We have heard so-called conservative Christian leaders declaring that Donald Trump a man who has no qualms about admitting that he cheats hard-working people out of their money, while inviting men to see his own daughter as a piece of ass as a model of moral rectitude whos just a bit rough around the edges.
We have heard Rudy Guiliani stating that Hillary Clinton should be wearing an orange jumpsuit, because bullying women has now become the GOP norm. We have listened as Newt Gingrinch attacked Megyn Kelly for being fascinated with sex when she dared discuss Trumps own well-known words and actions, confirming that Republicans are fully on-board with seeing poor Donald as the victim of out-of-control females.
We have watched as the powers-that-be on the other side of the aisle have demeaned and ridiculed the targets of Trumps political blatherings as deserving of ridicule, as citizens who have no right to object to being demeaned. We have watched as the oft-touted GOP phrase good Christian family values has been reduced to including the principles of a bigoted, xenophobic misogynist who thinks blacks are lazy by nature, Mexicans are rapists, Muslims are terrorists, the poor are moochers looking to game the system, and women are soulless harpies who need to shut the fuck up.
Instead of containing the rabid dog, the Republicans have chosen to coddle him, to defend him, to condone him, and to recommend him as suitable to govern a nation. Rather than wipe the tell-tale foam off the rabid dogs mouth, they have decided to share his sickness and spread it. Rather than say he is not representative of us, they have chosen to adopt his positions, and stand behind everything that is repugnant, everything that is clearly un-American, everything that they themselves once denounced.
I will give Donald Trump credit where its due. He has exposed the GOP as a party who will abandon its own oft-touted principles when convenient, and a party more than willing to sell out their own fellow citizens in an effort to see a rabid dog in the Oval Office.
We on the Democratic side of the aisle are eternally grateful for Trumps efforts. His damage to the GOP has been invaluable. The snarling rabid dog has been unleashed, and his defenders have been exposed as what theyve always been: spineless hypocrites who would rather denounce everything they once held to be true than admit theyve been hypocrites all along.
It was one thing for the Republicans to defend their candidate - that was expected. It is quite another thing to mimic him, and adopt his foaming-at-the-mouth rhetoric as being what you stand for.
What the GOP seems to be ignorant of is the fact that despite their codding, their "give him what he wants" position, their "be his best friend" attitude, a rabid dog will always bite you in the end and it will be a long time before the teeth marks on the ass of the Republicans fade away.

(43,049 posts)In my lifetime I remember Ike, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and two Bushes. And the ones who lost. In all cases, while I often disagreed with them, I had to admit that they had the good of the nation in mind. Well, maybe not Bush the Lesser, but that's only because he was basically-- stupid. Even Nixon, evil as he may have been in some ways, tried to govern to make the place a little better. Reagan was completely off his rocker with the worst advice imaginable, but in his mind he had the nation's best interests at heart. In those days R's and D's would fight like cats and dogs on the Senate or House floor, but meet for drinks after work and talk it out.
This crew now? Absolutely not. They are the worst of the worst and are leading us into a future of despair and ruin. Deliberate gridlock just because they don't like our black President is unimaginable and outrageous.
And it means that we don't have to work any more. We don't have to talk about a grand future because they have taken that idea and trashed it. We don't have to have ideas and plans because they have made ideas and plans useless. We don't even have to have ethics, because they have set the bar so low that there's almost no point in our trying.
We need a vibrant and dynamic Republican party that inspires us to do better, to be great. One that shares with us the recognition of our problems and honestly debates how best to solve them. An honest discussion of the future of this nation.

(2,674 posts)The republican party is supposed to be the party of Christian family values. Here in Dallas, the ministers of the two largest Southern Baptist Churches, First Baptist and Prestonwood Baptist, both support Trump. One, Robert Jeffers. makes frequent appearances on Fox News touting Trump. How can anyone respect them.

(27,817 posts)... and yet I have infinite respect for those who walk in the footsteps of The Nazarene.
What I have ZERO tolerance for is those who purport to be Christians, while shitting on everything Christ stood for.
If you stand with the party that refuses to shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, care for the sick, and do unto others as you would have done onto you, you are NOT a Christian by any stretch of the imagination.

The entire republican party is an embarrassment.

(82,383 posts)That is especially true, we see time and time again they have no true principles. They grab on to something to use against Democrats but it is not something they really care about. For example in the 90s a president's personal sex life was our business and it should be a moral one. That they can even consider the Orange Disaster with his history proves they never cared about that. They only thought it useful to use against Bill Clinton.
