I listened to a Trump rally today.

I live in Ohio, and Trump had a rally in my hometown today. I did not go, but I did listen to it on local radio. It literally gave me the creeps. Of course, there was a good dose of “red meat” in his speech. But, more than that, it was his so-called “issues” that made me wonder about the members of the crowd, and how he had control of them. What struck me most was how they were letting him get away with things they would have rejected if said by someone other than Trump.

For example:

When union leaders and democrats complain about trade deals, they are labeled as being against free trade. They are considered anti-capitalist, and painted as not understanding how markets work.

If union leaders or democrats suggest a tariff, cries of government control can be heard from every right-winger.

If a democratic candidate suggests spending on infrastructure, they get called a "tax and spend liberal".

If a democrat threatened to “not let companies leave America”, they would be called a dictator.

There are many other examples, but I think you can get my point.

Trump gets to say whatever he wants, and no one in the crowd seems to realize that he is actually talking about a lot of spending and government control with everything he wants to do. It also goes over their heads that some of what he wants to do may be unconstitutional as well. It's kind of scary how Trump's supporters are willing to give a pass to certain things for Trump, and Trump alone.

He could promise universal healthcare, guaranteed incomes, whatever. It doesn't matter. When he said he could shoot someone on 5th avenue, and would still get support he was spot on.

Trump isn't advocating a smaller, more libertarian government, or a market-oriented approach to social problems, or anything. He's talking racist shit to racist people and the words and "positions" serve no function than to stir the pot. He is just pushing buttons and that's it. Nothing else.

It's tribal, not logical. A bonding ritual. What matters is the resentment, the belonging, the confusion, and the substratum of hatred. Logic and perspective are just more bullshit to these people.
