In your first scenario, consider that many of Donald Trump's supporters are older, white suburbanites. Those people have lived at the same address for years and their registrations have remained in effect, (I think but I don't know all the individual state election laws).

Regarding your second point, everyone mis-speaks. I loathe Mr. Trump, but to criticize his slip of the tongue about the date of the election is as silly as the right-wing meme that President Obama said that there are 57 states. Both ideas are ridiculous.
