In a tirade against renewables, Trump claims wind power kills all the birds
Thousands of birds are lying on the ground. And the eagle.
When it comes to renewable energy, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is just really concerned about the eagles.
{Wind power} kills all the birds, Trump told 2012 Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain on the latters radio show Tuesday. Thousands of birds are lying on the ground. And the eagle. You know, certain parts of California theyve killed so many eagles. You know, they put you in jail if you kill an eagle. And yet these windmills [{kill{ them by the hundreds.
Trump also told Cain that solar and wind are very, very expensive and not working on a large-scale. And he criticized the way wind turbines look, calling the windmills in Palm Springs, California a junkyard. (This is not the case, as Grist points out in their fact-check of Trumps claims.)
They have all these different companies and each one is made by a different group from, all from China and from Germany, by the way not from here, said Trump, who often sells products made in other countries. And you look at all these windmills. Half of them are broken. Theyre rusting and rotting. You know, youre driving into Palm Springs, California, and it looks like a poor mans version of Disneyland. Its the worst thing youve ever seen.

(25,861 posts)that wind power seriously kills lots of birds. As in thousands, maybe millions. Somehow I find that not to be completely believable. Certainly, whenever I drive by wind farms, I have never seen evidence of dead birds piled up around the windmills.

Its been a long run, coal, but your reign is over.
Renewable energy sources have passed coal as the largest new source of electricity in the world, according data released Tuesday by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The transition of the worlds energy sources is critical for avoiding a 2°C rise in global temperatures. Coal, for instance, represented about a quarter of U.S. CO2 emissions in 2012.
Solar and wind account for almost two-thirds of the growth in renewables, which is coming from industrialized and developing nations alike.

(8,168 posts)A couple of good quotes I found on FB about this:
"Among all the birds that ARE killed, about 99% of them are by houses, cats, cars, and smokestacks... so get lost... please."
and
"He's not wrong that bird deaths are still too high, but the industry is working hard on solutions. What's really going on here is he's still sore about the offshore turbines near his golf course in Scotland. He didn't care about birds then -- it was strictly aesthetic. Trump didn't want his view "marred." Since then, he's carried a grudge against windpower. He's just settling personal scores."
