2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhen I hear the term "zingers," my response is usually "meh." But THESE were ZINGERS, folks.
Getting through these three debates with Donald has to count as a miracle.
Trump looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a 4.
I have now stood next to Donald Trump for longer than any of his campaign managers.
Donald is as healthy as a horse. You know, the one Vladimir Putin rides around on.
How is Barack going to get past the Muslim ban?
Donald thought I used some sort of performance enhancer [during the debates]. Actually I did. Its called preparation.
Donald will tell us after the benediction whether he accepts this dinner is over. He has to wait and see.

(62,444 posts)For as much material as she had, they could have cut a few.
But, nothing like the line Trump had crossed.
Does anyone remember the Fox "Half Hour News Hour" or whatever it was called, which was supposed to be a "right wing" news comedy show, and how painfully it flopped?
There is a segment of the population that doesn't "get" or "do" humor.
For example, on the "Muslim ban" thing, there were actually Trumpsters on twitter who believed she was "finally" making an admission, instead of mocking both the "Muslim ban" and the "Obama is a Muslim" thing.
I think when Trump started with "Hillary Clinton is so corrupt", that the expectation was for the audience response "How corrupt is she?" But even if one could conceivably pull that off with that crowd, the delivery would have to be a lot "goofier" as in, "I'm trying to do a Rodney Dangerfield here", but still it wasn't going to work given the seriousness with which he regularly makes bizarre accusations.

(58,785 posts)the core of the Trump problem--his complete disregard for freedom, enlightenment, and welcome. And it was funny. The audience agreed.
That said, the harshest line to Trump himself may just have been, "Im curious to hear what a billionaire (Michael Bloomberg) has to say. Pointedly suggesting Trump is not one.
The whole was too mean for my taste, and I'm sure hers too, but Hillary still has a job to do and the stakes are enormous. A senate majority is not in the bag, and a house majority is within reach IF we can get it. And Trump still technically has a chance to be elected, such as after a serious terrorist strike. So, she pokes and hopes to push him into another devastatingly revealing rage while she can.

(7,581 posts)He deserved every second of that Statue of Liberty one. I thought that was great.
Well, looks as though he had a fresh coat of shellac applied after the debate. Back to his bilious orange color. One shot of Maleria sitting beside him made her look like a bird of prey, she looked like a hawk!!

(4,033 posts)Most of her stuff was really good, but yes, she should have cut a couple. the two you mention and the 'performance enhancing' one.
Donald got off a couple at the beginning that were pretty good. The one about Michele giving a speech and then Melania giving 'the exact same speech' was one of his best. Even the one about Hillary bumping into him and saying 'Pardon me' would have been a really good line if he had left it right there and not added the line about 'after he was in office'. But, of course, part of Donald's shtick is to start well then go off the rails.

Does the punchline mean he sees a woman in a size 4? If so, that's pretty funny.
Otherwise, it flew over my head...

Unfortunately, it got lost in the pile of shit that preceded and followed it.

(4,138 posts)Although even that joke illustrated Trump's ridiculous pettiness. If he had just done that joke, everyone there would have got the context, but he had to precede it with a bunch of painfully unfunny whining about how the media is mean to him.
His line about Hilary facing the largest audience of her campaign was pretty good too (as was Hilary's about doing the speech beneath her normal rate).

(15,392 posts)That is just a basic joke with such a trite punchline, and he repeated it like people didn't get it since there wasn't any laughter. I guess he thought that was his best line. But it doesn't even make sense. The Watergate Commission (or whatever Trump called it) are presumptively the good guys investigating corruption in the executive branch. The joke only works is if Hillary was on Nixon's side, and Nixon and his cronies looked at her and went, "Whoa... I know I'm dishonest, but she takes it to another level!"
