John McCain Finds Arizona Senate Race Isn’t a Lock

Republican senator contends with Democrats’ new focus in the state in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s comments

TUCSON, Ariz.—Republican John McCain, war hero, five-term senator and his party’s 2008 candidate for president, is such a national brand name that GOP Senate candidates in other parts of the country want him for their campaign events.

This week, Democrats are using their own marquee names in his home state in a bid to bolster their own brand, an effort to help presidential nominee Hillary Clinton while also boosting Mr. McCain’s Democratic challenger, Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick.

The Clinton campaign announced on Monday that it would spend $2 million on advertising here. And Democrats are sending one of their most popular speakers—first lady Michelle Obama—to the state on Thursday. The campaign sent Sen. Bernie Sanders to Arizona on Tuesday, followed by Mrs. Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, on Wednesday.

Mr. McCain’s dilemma is the same as that of other Republicans, who need voters who strongly back GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, but also must keep those who are offended by the nominee. His job is now being made harder in the face of an onslaught by the top figures in the Democratic Party, who can use their money and time to try to define Mr. McCain in ways that exacerbate divisions in his party.

keep kicking him while he's down. It will depress GOP turnout across the board.

for the Supreme Court she would put forth. McCain is mad about how well they are doing in AZ & she is putting more money into the state.
