McCain Backs Away From Benghazi Conspiracies

McCain Backs Away From Benghazi Conspiracies

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) today issued a statement essentially conceding that he was wrong in accusing the White House of changing U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s talking points on Benghazi for political purposes.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus told lawmakers last week that the CIA’s assessment that al Qaeda was responsible for the Sept. 11 attack that killed four Americans in Benghazi was taken out of Rice’s talking points after an interagency review. McCain and his allies then claimed the White House took out the talking points because it supposedly undercut the Obama administration’s narrative that it had severely weakened al Qaeda.

But Intelligence officials told CNN yesterday that the intelligence community was responsible for the changes made to Rice’s talking points. The Director of National Intelligence spokesperson said that the White House did not make any “substantive changes.”

-snip-

-snip-

But now that every angle of McCain’s attacks have been completely debunked, all he has left is to complain about not being told that intelligence officials didn’t give him this information sooner.

That was one of the most brilliant characters on the old Saturday Night Live! And I have been trying to think of her name, and I can't. In one hilarious segment, she misunderstood the word "bussing" and railed against the thought of "busting" schoolchildren.

Next time show up for the briefing instead of holding a press conference to complain about not getting briefed.

So he really doesn't have that angle either. And when members of your party leak information that can get our allies killed, don't expect to be at the top of the call tree.

To me it comes off like he's trying to claim that this present situation (wherein he's found out 'belatedly' about the actual source of Ms. Rice's 'omissions') calls for ever MORE 'suspicion' (suspicion of WHAT exactly, you crazy f***nut?) of the Administration, not less.

To me if you read the whole quote it almost sounds more like he's doubling down on his bullshit, rather than backing away.

Step 1: Accumulate egg on face
Step 2: Come to the realization that egg is indeed on face
Step 3: Consider steps necessary to remove egg from face
Step 4: Begin process once again (typically a new "outrage&quot . Face fully exposed; fresh eggs ready to go.

At the moment, McCain seems to be hovering at Step 2.
