afford to defend themselves adequately with legal representation. I can guarantee that there are attorneys who are at the top of the heap who would volunteer to defend any of those women at no charge whatsoever.

Most of his threats to sue are sheer intimidation and are specious. The NYT let him know that in a blistering reply to their cease and desist letter. Trump's attorneys are no match for the legal team the NYT can assemble in a First Amendment case. They'd make mincemeat of Trump's arguments and serve a pie made of it to all comers.

Considering the important work that major newspapers have done in our country's history, it's no surprise that they've hired the best legal teams. In the decades past, there have been serious lawsuits regarding The Pentagon Papers, the Watergate affair, Iran-Contra and the Iraq War among many others.

I completely agree with you, Mineral Man, that there are plenty of first-class lawyers who would be extremely aggressive in defending any of the women who are willing to fight Donald Trump. Even Gloria Allred- ugh- could present an excellent defense.

But let's get real, here. Donald Trump is not going to sue because his lawyers know they don't have a case. Importantly, they could never let their client be deposed! Mr. Trump screamed for blood and the lame letter that Mr. Kasowitz wrote on his behalf was the best he could come up with. Pathetic.

I doubt any of the women are wealthy, so there aren't really damages to win. Lawsuits would just shine more light on the cases.

coming forward. He's letting them know in no uncertain terms that if they dare to do so he will pubicly denounce them, call them liars, insult their looks, etc., and make them think he will cause them great financial harm if they have to lawyer up to defend against even a frivolous lawsuit. Pretty much the same reasons they have not been willing to speak up before now.

In 1895 the Marquess of Queensberry made a written statement that the author Oscar Wilde was a "sodomite," and Wilde sued him for libel. Unfortunately for Wilde, Queensberry's lawyers hired private detectives who uncovered evidence that Wilde had consorted with male prostitutes, thus establishing the truth of Queensberry's statement. In those unenlightened days homosexuality was a crime, and as a result of his unsuccessful lawsuit against Queensberry, Wilde ended up in the slammer for a couple of years. He had been strongly advised against suing Queensberry, which turned out to be good advice.

The point is, if you actually did the things that you claim are the basis of a defamatory statement, you might be better off not taking somebody to court over it. Truth is an absolute defense to libel. If Trump starts suing people for defamation on the ground that their claims he groped them were false, he will be opening not a can of worms but a 55-gallon drum.
