Election anxiety is real. A majority of Americans report “significant stress” in 2016.

I know I'm stressed listening to Trump supporters.

You’re not alone.

Election chatter is filled with hyperbole — dished out by candidates, pundits, and voters. But this year, the vitriol is acute. Donald Trump has called Hillary Clinton “the devil” and threatened to imprison her during the second presidential debate if he became president. The New York Times editorial board called Trump the “worst nominee put forward by a major party in modern American history.

So it shouldn’t be surprising that the majority of Americans are stressed the heck out about the election.

The American Psychological Association has released some preliminary data from its upcoming annual “Stress in America” report, on the nation’s level of anxiety specifically around this election.

Around half of people surveyed (52 percent) say the election “is a very or somewhat significant” source of stress in their lives. The breakdown by party is about even: 59 percent of Republicans and 55 percent of Democrats say this election is causing them stress.

Don't listen to it, turn it off. IMO to much 'election spam' causes the anxiety and stress. Sunlei Oct 2016 #2

Last year my husband was very ill, for the entire year, and as part of the strategy to make sure his treatment would be successful, and that he would end up on the right side of his illness (he did!), I decided that the one thing I could do was to remove as much stress from our lives as possible. I mean, we were living in a total Zen shelter as much as possible, focusing solely on pills, infusions, surgical recovery, and meaningless distractions like old movies and gentle television diversion.

I refuse to allow this election to let unnecessary stress back into our life--the dishwasher breaking is about the only kind of stress I want to deal with. So I avoid most all of the daily TV banter, confining myself to newspapers and selected posts on this site, etc. I've watched the debates, but mostly with the sound off any time Trump speaks. I purposefully did not watch his speech today. (I might look at selected clips later.)

Honestly, for everyone, round-the-clock attention to this circus is bad for your health! If anything, get yourself down to a campaign office and do something constructive: it will make you feel positive. Turn off the TV, or change the channel to something fun. And ...

Don't Worry, Be Happy. Our long national nightmare is almost over.

Twenty minutes before the last debate, I started getting nervous and then I became nauseous...literally.
