2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumFor the men of DU! Kick please
I saw the thread celebrating the women of DU but felt the men deserved one too. Over the past 15 years I have been a member of DU I can say I've met about 100 of you in person. Many more of you are friends on facebook or maybe just friends here at DU.
You are fathers, you are brothers, you are husbands and you are sons. But one thing you all are is class! You respect women and treat us as equals. No one had to teach you that 'No means No' because to you that was just common sense. You may tease us women in a fun way (please no tollbooth jokes!) but in the end you know that women deserve the same respect and treatment as you would give to men - as you would want for yourself!
As a woman I'd like to say Thank you!

(62,426 posts)I have daughters and all I ever wanted for them is to be treated as equals. I figured they could take it from there.
But i fully understand that goal is elusive in this country.
Thanks for the good words.

(95,337 posts)I'm a DU Old Fart. I organized the first massive DU gathering in Philly back in like 2002 - about 125 people showed up.
I went to dozens of war protests in DC and NYC with DUers. I also marched at the 2004 Pro-Choice movement in DC that had about a million people. I think EarlG and Skinner still have the George Bush cutout that we carried at the protest where hundreds of people decorated Bush!
But I'm getting older and set in my ways so just keep it local. Last meetup I organized was 2009 at the Inauguration. But I don't think I will be doing one in 2017 only because I'm getting my hip replaced on 1/3
FailureToCommunicate
(14,014 posts)good luck with the new hip. After my mom got one she was a new person, in great spirits.

(95,337 posts)Kick is when you reply to a thread and it bumps it to the top.
K&R is when you reply to a thread (see above) and then click on the Rec button! Helps puts it on DU home page!

(95,337 posts)They don't want to demean women like sex objects or force themselves unwilling on them.
They just want to be friends with them, maybe fall in love with one of them and have a family.
Most women are the same way too.
Unfortunately it's the extreme that is getting the attention.

I played sports for many years when I was much younger, never heard talk like that in any locker room. I worked in construction with some of the most rough and tumble guys you could ever meet. If anyone ever disrespected an woman with talk like that in front of them, those people would be shut down immediately.
That man is .... Manners dictate I say no more.

(27,787 posts)It is a weak man who wants to be with a woman who he considers "less" than himself. Yet far too many men seem to want exactly that. Some one they can control.
When I was much younger, I spoke of my mother to a group of people (family friends and people who knew her). And as part of that, I said she was the "smartest, toughest, most determined woman I'd ever met." ... and they applauded ...
But after saying that out loud, and hearing it in my own ears .... I said "Wait, wait, no. That is wrong!" (the people there gasped, and quieted, and so I continued and said) ... "What I meant to say is that she is the smartest, toughest, most determined PERSON I'd ever met."
And she was. And they understood why I amended my statement. And loudly agreed.
By referencing her gender, one could conclude I put her in a category that did not include men.
You said no one had to teach us men this lesson, but in my case, I can not take that credit.
It was my mother who taught me this lesson. And fortunately for me, I was paying attention as she did so.
I have two daughters now. They know this story well. And they know that I THINK they should never feel limited because of their gender. But I know they can still feel that way.
They are 15 and 17. They have both heard Trump's words. I'm hoping hearing those words prepare them for what might come at that in the years to come. And they are as smart, tough, and determined as their grandmother was.
Side note: My oldest daughter plays fast pitch softball. We go to batting cages to practice hitting. The machines can pitch baseballs as as fast 75 miles an hour. She will regularly go into the 75mph baseball cage, crush balls, and show up boys of the same age. Those boys are blown away. One time, as she went into that cage, a boy said to the other boys "Does she think that is a good idea?" The boys all laughed. Until they saw her hit. Then they went quiet, and just watched her smack ball after ball. She hit far better than any of them. And then, she switched from hitting right-handed, to hitting left-handed, and she continued to smack ball after ball, better than any of them.
She loves to be underestimated. Let the boys laugh. She's not intimidated in the least.
One the day I mentioned above, the coach of those boys was there. He videotaped her to show them how to hit. And he told her that if she ever gave up fast-pitch softball, she could transfer to his school, and he'd put her on his fast-pitch baseball team.
Bottom line: Men who think woman are "less" are really more afraid that people will see them as "less". Which is where Trump is.
