Years to run for president, house, and senate seats? All that time, all that money, all that corruption. We need to limit the time of campaigning before elections. We could learn a lot from the U.K. I suggest that 30 days is plenty long enough to size up candidates before an election. That could reduce costs, corruption, and days away from their elected office.
As it is - our elected officials are in perpetual campaign mode. That may be good for them, but it's bad for America.

(18,402 posts)I think the OP is trying to emphasize limitations on the length of time allowed for campaigns (which of course, necessitates the need for excessive amounts of money). Most advanced countries in Europe, as well as Canada, permit only a few months of campaigning, beginning to end. Ours stretches on for 2 full years. Both the primaries and the general election are too distended, and the whole thing has turned into a veritable industry, with a full-time media complement, swag companies, arena rentals, ad agencies, consultants and others making a full-time business out of it.
I fully agree with the OP. I'd like to see 3 months devoted to primaries, and 3 to the general. Even that is a very generous amount of time to devote to political campaigns. More time for actual governing.

(5,057 posts)Virtually every other civilized nation limits the number of days of campaigning. By doing so - they eliminate the "always on" campaign mode that swallows up enormous amount of money, lays the groundwork for influence peddling, and keeps elected officials from doing their job.
If thirty days is too short, make it four months. But for heavens sake - we must stop the endless campaigning. It's making our democracy worse not better.
