2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMedia keeps saying "Hillary was rattled" by Trump's stalking. Please tell me what were the "tells"
...that demonstrated to the talking heads of MSNBC and CNN that Hillary was shaken by Donald's vile behavior before and during the so-called town hall.
Because what I saw was a woman dealing patiently with a petulant toddler. I saw a dignified woman standing up to a man who tried to drag her into the sewer while she refused to even say one word on the subject. I saw a woman who never lost her cool for even a second. I saw a woman who given the slightest chance talked knowledgeably and thoughtfully about any policy on any subject.
All the while her opponent was looming over her, making faces, grunting, interrupting, and seething with rage.
So what were the "tells" that I missed?

He came off as upset and desperate, nearly unhinged and agitated.

The "media" should be pointing out what an asshole trump was instead of making up shite about Hillary.

(81,500 posts)I did watch it. The young woman talking to Chris Hayes tonight said "you could tell she was rattled." Uh, no. You couldn't. I was watching specifically to see how she maintained her cool. And she did. Cool as a cucumber. Again. She didn't take ANY of his bait. She comported herself, again, like the only adult in the room. It was almost like watching a weary-but-patient mother with her uncontrollable six-year-old brat-child who's busy throwing a huge hissy fit in the store to get A) his way and B) more attention.
Hopefully ANYBODY in there, even those still, impossibly, undecided, could extrapolate how she'd be in the White House in a crisis. How she'd be, and behave, in the highest of high-octane meetings, events, international economic conferences, NATO meetings, UN speeches, joint sessions of Congress, you name it. You can see how she'd handle face-offs with Vladimir Putin. Cool as a cucumber. Calm, poised, unruffled, classy, professional, knowledgeable, observant, strategically shrewd, and pretty clearly a student of psychology and what makes people tick. She passed last night's test with straight A+'s across the board.
Cha
(297,692 posts)was all those adjectives you described!
Why are those people on tv trying to say she was rattled?! Like she couldn't handled a crisis 'cause she couldn't handled a psycho predator on the debate stage?
The US media always wants to manipulate and change the narrative to the way they want the story to go. Damn Good thing we have the net and Social Media to let them know what's really going on!
Seth Meyers was dead on in his analysis of the predator on the stage..

(171 posts)Hillary became a senator in 2000 due to Slick Rick's attempt at intimidation. Trying to tower over her like a stalker. Hillary did a double take and kept on going. At that moment Tricky Rickie lost most women in the state. Most of them knew what it's like to have a man trying to physically intimidate them - and they wouldn't allow it.
Also, Hillary was smart, did a listening tour with her soon-to-be constituents. She was there after 9-11. I know. I saw her. What some people don't realize is her compassion and wanting to help. She has a reason to be in the arena.
A remarkable person, she has been vilified, abused and accused, and yet, she moves forward. Yes, Bill and she became rich, giving speeches, but they also convinced people, corporations and countries to donate money to save lives. Her (and Bill's) compassion is something you don't see on the right-side of the aisle (except as a money-making or grifter schemes).
She's been, shat, spat and chat upon, and yet, still maintains her dignity. She knows her goals are more important than the threats and lies (and Maureen Dud) disseminate about her. Hillary is battle-tested, experienced and someone who has a humanitarian reason to be in politics.
So, being rattled by Trump is so far from the realm of possibility. Anyone who knows anything about her knows her inner strength courage is more powerful than any Orange Julius (Caesar) bully.

(297,692 posts)I've mentioned that rick Lazio thing before in regards to trump's psycho predatory stalking on stage last night. I was in New York then and saw that debate on tv.
It was a big ******* no-no then.. so why isn't now with trump? I wonder if any babbling head bothered to compare the two debates? I stopped watching them in 2002.
Thank you!
Trump's tramping behind Hillary is having the same effect as Lazio. Since he can't remember anything before his last sniffle, he didn't know how that stalking helped her.
But, you know, she never needed that help. Hillary is smart, conscientious, strong and motivated to help this country. She never needed some oaf to unwittingly help her. Hillary has the goods.
I hope she can bring a Democratic Senate and House in on her coattails this November. And a couple of new Supreme Court justices. I have confidence that her administration will reverse the Reagan, Bush (1 & 2) debacles. And finally end the stingy Tea Party with healthy helpings for not only the middle class, but also the poor and the disregarded.

(85 posts)They all have to help their networks make a profit. There is no difference between MSNBC, TRMS, Chris Hayes, etc. when it comes to business and money.
They may have all started out with good intentions, and they may have a "left lean," but they have the same interest as Fox News to keep the eyeballs on the tv. Anyone who watched the "debate" knows that Hillary demolished Trump, and the stalker/ sniffer demolished himself. Just trust your own instinct. Democrats have a bizarre tendency to think that their observations are somehow not the same as the rest of America. People know bullshit when they see it, no matter the party. So, help gotv, which I am doing and dragging many friends with me, and proceed with confidence.

(92,410 posts)Actually they looked like fools when they said this. They were showing a video of the debate with Trump stalking Hillary, while she was rattling off her points, completely ignoring the twirp. The ones who were rattled were the media. She was as cool as they come.
Hillary is one tough person, and there was no way she was rattled. She was calm and collected, while everyone else, especially the media, was losing their head

But then Trump threatened to have Secretary Clinton assassinated and my respect for her courage and fortitude began to grow and has continued to grow ever since. After the release of the tape, I even broke open ny wallet to send her a few bucks. A symbolic gesture on ny part to show her how much I respect her now.
I still disagree with her vehemently on some policies., but I now have zero doubt that she will make an excellent president, one for whom I shall proudly cast my ballot come Nov. 8.
I am exceedingly sorry that she has to contend with this ersatz Caesar. She and we deserved better from the opposition.

Donald is not accustomed to getting zero respect. He was probably rattled right off, when she said, "Hello. Hello." and did not offer a handshake.

(19,568 posts)She actually wanted him behind her so the camera could catch his reactions. It's an old trick from Bill's (and we know who helped coach him ) playbook. Not that she expected it to bear the fruit it ended up yielding.
If anything she was surprised it was so easy to keep him in the frame. You know she laughed her butt off when she saw the body language, and creepy faces he was putting on behind her.

We can safely assume it wasn't (b), and I'm sure they'll be coming along with the "Hillary is a lesbian" thing any time now. No more than two weeks, tops.
You know what else gets "rattled"?

(3,635 posts)that considering the ugliness of his attacks and rehashing of the 90's scandals, she was remarkably poised and polished, and didn't take the bait.
That is the correct strategy when you're way ahead and the opponent is imploding, just step back and let it happen.
They said the debate was dark, tense and bitter, and she was much more subdued than in the first debate, and Trump much more focused in his attacks - but that is to be expected given the circumstances.
They said Trump did better than expected, but she still did what she needed to do, just appear presidential. Some said it was a tie, some said he won narrowly, some said she won narrowly. The CNN snap poll showed she won 57-34, and the focus group they had showed her winning overwhelmingly.
I watched the entire MSNBC post debate coverage, and some CNN on Monday evening, and that is mostly what I heard.

(53,072 posts)But I could see it in her eyes on at least one point. Trump's behavior in bringing those women to the debate was unspeakably cruel. Hillary is human. It bothered her. But she is remarkably strong and handled it with great composure.
