Mitt Romney Says Bill Clinton Told Him Hurricane Sandy Won Obama Election

Last edited Thu Nov 15, 2012, 03:57 PM - Edit history (1)

WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney claimed during a call with donors on Wednesday that he received a call from former President Bill Clinton, who told Romney that had it not been for Hurricane Sandy, he might have won the election.

ABC News offers the following transcript of the former GOP presidential nominee’s comments:

”I spoke with President Clinton the day before yesterday, he called and spent 30 minutes chatting with me. He said a week out I thought you were going to win. And he said, but the hurricane happened, and it gave the president a chance to be presidential, and to look bipartisan, and you know he got a little more momentum, and of course he also said that when he was watching Ann speak at the Republican convention, he decided he was tempted to join the Republican Party. So he may have just been effusive with generous comments as he chatted.”

But the theory that Sandy is accountable for the president's victory is questionable. Little evidence in both national and swing state polling supported the idea that Romney had sustained the momentum he gained following the first presidential debate.

A spokesperson for Clinton did not immediately return a request for. Mitt comment.

I love Bill Clinton but sometimes he talks too much. <-------- I glanced at this article really fast before posting and reacted to it without thinking. Was Mitt lying? It's highly probable. It's also possible that Clinton was just "laying down some hargle-bargle" as journalist Dave Weigl calls it.

or won it for President Obama. I keep hearing this over and over again but nobody explains (and nobody asks anybody to explain) how and why. I'm trying to make the connection but I can't. I don't think that Romney was actually "winning" before Sandy hit unless you're talking about the popular vote but the fact that the election wasn't even close should put to the rest that Sandy had anything to do with Romney losing. Romney basically lost because he was an awful candidate.

Let me make this response: Bush did a horrible job handling Katrina. Obama did an excellent job handling Sandy. Sandy reminded people that if they wanted government to work, they better vote for a Democrat, not a Republican.

and not just in regards to Sandy but when you contrast his response to things like Benghazi to Romney's cheap and reckless attempt to politicize it before the dust had even settled, there should be no contest IMHO.

Jones at PoliticusUSA

Snips..

Bill Clinton is one of the best politicians around. He knows the hurricane did not win the election for Obama, although Obama’s competency in dealing with it did not hurt. Obama was already winning in the swing states, where he swept Romney, leaving him “shell shocked”.

Obviously, Romney is having a tough time with reality. Not only did his first debate bump not last past the improving economic numbers just days later, but this is the man who put words in Australia’s Foreign Minister’s mouth in order to attack Obama.

He was already going to win. It may have been closer, maybe not. Sandy did give him a spotlight a week before the election and made it very difficult for Romney to do anything with out looking like the psychotic clown he is.
