North Dakota among worst states for racist Obama tweets; Minnesota 10thBy: Marino Eccher, INFORUM
FARGO A small but vocal group of disgruntled North Dakotans took to the Web after last weeks election to put the state on the map in an ugly way.
According to a group of researchers who crunch online geographic data, the state was among the national leaders in the rate of racist messages on Twitter posted before and after President Barack Obamas re-election.
The good news is that there werent all that many racist tweets thrown out there. The analysis, published by the group Floatingsheep, found just 395 tweets from Nov. 1 to Nov. 7 that included references to Obama or the election as well as one of two explicit racial slurs.

(4,119 posts)I remember reading years ago...way before Obama...that the highest rate of alcoholism and suicide is up in those states...North Dakota, Montana, etc. They are miserable unhappy people who need to find a scapegoat for their hate.
Not all of them, of course. I'm sure there are many wonderful people up there. I feel for them having to live among the crazies.

(666 posts)all rednecks and were/are pissed off that Obama won. This person had to go to work , keep the mouth shut, and listen to all the BS on wednesday. Did anyone see the clip on CNN last night, anderson cooper, in which one county in Texas (I think Cooks County where Romney won 134 -5)? All the white racist still believe the president wasn't born here.

(252 posts)although we indigenous people do not consider ourselves 'minorities', there were enough of us voting to put Heidi over the hump. (Obama - Heitkamp 2012!) we have the L/Dakota peoples, the Michif (Ojibwe) and the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara with a smattering of Hispanics and Blacks in our beautiful state. and I am NOT surprised at the amount of racist tweets originating from here. it is common knowledge that we have a LARGE number of what i call 'casual racists' here. we live with it every day. racial profiling, being followed in stores because we might steal something, not being able to obtain credit, my wife (non-indian) being amazed at the overt racism after having been told she should not have married 'that indian'. et al...the native people half-seriously call north and south dakota the alabama and mississippi of the north...

(15,262 posts)a nice family in Minot that ran a great cafe with the best burgers in ND. It was a big deal it was to have a non-white football star at NDSU in 1967-68 or so when they were National Champs. The could not have done it without Chicago's finest!

(392 posts)Everywhere you look they are spread everywhere evenly across the country. Even the blue states like california has a herd of the hater. I live in the REDDEST part of the state and they hate, smoke and complain. When things get better they stop CLUCKING and stick there heads in the ground like an ostrich.

(22,000 posts)Some of the states which were pretty low on that list have the worst cases of racism. I'm wondering if the lack of internet access is a factor in some of the more rural states.

(18,791 posts)I didn't look at the link but I wonder if this has to do with any of the massive influx of (mostly) males, that have gone to the state to work the blossoming oil fields? Or, the churches up there have unleashed a tirade of the usual Obama hate.
There could be some meatheads involved in that?
I will also note, that my folks were from North Dakota (in the 1910's and 1920's). Several years ago, in a conversation of my Mom with one of her sisters that still lived there...regarding a sister, of one of her (my Aunt's) daughter in laws...the sister was killed in a fire in an old farm house. That gal was a lesbian...my Aunt told my Mom, "...well, she was nice enough but folks around here don't like TYPES like her."
...creepy.
