what was Pences strategy regarding deductions?

Okay, so this is hard to explain because my family and I were talking over the debate at times but, anytime Kaine mentioned Trump's tax returns, pence would ask something along the lines of "well how do you do your deductions?" Or something like that.

What defense was Pence trying to pull?

That we all take the deductions we are entitled to and Trump just did that. Mass Oct 2016 #1
but how is that defense supposed to work? retrowire Oct 2016 #2
I didn't get that either. I suppose any answer fits, so long as Pence says something ffr Oct 2016 #3

That doesn't explain not paying them, saying you're smart for not paying them and it doesn't explain why you're not releasing your recent tax returns?

His position is indefensible, so he really can't say anything. But I think the strategy was to shore up their base. And to those people truth doesn't matter, just a talking point, even a poor one will work.

I give Pence and his debate team a big

The law probably didn't require him to pay. That'll be enough for his followers--never mind that Trump is on record bragging about the YUGE taxes he supposedly paid, and chiding Obama for not paying enough.
