If Pence Won, Why Are His Many Lies The Big Takeaway From The Debate?

Last edited Wed Oct 5, 2016, 12:14 PM - Edit history (1)

The only thing he "won" was the "who can lie with a straight face" award.

Steve Schmidt called it last night on MSNBC. He said that Pence's easily disproved lies would be all that survived from this debate, and he was right. Lawrence O'Donnell made the same point.

It was funny to watch the MSNBC talking heads move from their "Pence won" pronouncements to "he looked good in the moment, but the lies are going to come back to haunt him...like, tomorrow" declarations within minutes of Schmidt and O'D setting them straight (except for Tweety, who had a couple of Rs on for his late show examination of the debate. Tweety didn't get the memo from the experts).

In retrospect, Team Hillary attacked with another winning and unexpected move that will pay dividends right up to the election. The message: Pence is just as big a liar as Trump. This was a brilliant gambit on Team Hillary's part. Having the mild and respectful Tim Kaine act as the unrelenting attack dog was brilliant, catching Pence totally off guard. The fact that once again the debate went differently than the media expected and predicted is proof that Team Clinton is a couple of steps ahead of the media and a country mile ahead of Team Trump when it comes to deploying an effective election strategy.

Not so effective at telling the truth.
Something the public will appreciate more and more
as they think about what was truly said and who
was trying to hoodwink them.

the media came into it wanting to give the "win" to Pence ...

Simple as that.

It was only a matter of what brain dead rationale they would rally around to do it.

Two more debates and Election Night!

Viewership and ad revenue at stake!

"Yes, America, it's not over yet - we're going to make it look like Trump can win no matter what!"

I can't believe all the people on DU who say, apparently with a straight face, that Pence won that debate. It's just another grading on the curve: Pence didn't actually throw out insults to AAs, Hispanics, and women (except for about abortion of course), so he "won."

Not in the debate I saw. Pence was dodging and denying what Trump has clearly said in the very recent past; he finally was reduced to saying that "Mr. Trump isn't an experienced politician." So WHAT? He's a 70-year old man who talks like a fourth grader bully.

He kept at it! I appreciate that so much! Because it was the first time that someone called out the Trump ticket for 90 long minutes -in person- to their faces- on their many lies and abuses! Kaine took it as his job to say: you lie, lie, lie! And he never back down!

some time ago that the winner of the "snap" polls isn't always the long term beneficiary. Sometimes, the media narrative can overwhelm initial impressions as the content is examined in greater detail.

No thinking person can truly believe that. Now if someone were to have watched only the first twenty minutes, I can see how an argument could be made. Outside of that it's nothing more than morons on the right and ratfuckers calling it a win for him. Was that a bit redundant. lol.

Pence proved himself to be Trumplike last night. He made that connection clear. People who like that are saying he won.
