2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumGuys, I saw last 40 mins of debate and Kaine really dominated and won....
I donot understand how Pence won...
1. He did not address Trump Foundation, whatever he said was lie, Kaine told exactly how Clinton Foundation is rated.
2. He did not address how his religious beliefs will impact governing and he said he will impose his pro-life stance on women, Kaine destroyed him, he actually gave a solid example where is held views of state of VA than his on death penalty.
3. Pence did not address North Korea but just said President Don will make our military stong, like we have a weak Military, Kaine on other hand gave solid example of forcing china to back down and put economic sanctions.
I saw Pence throwing BS and Senator Kaine saying truth in nice way... I donot care what happened before, Sen Kaine won...
Finally, Chill, Senator Kaine did what was needed...

(23,558 posts)It's about image. It's about who the media feels looks more nervous who interrupted the moderator more. It about crap like that.
They don't talk about the issues anymore.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)rude and continuously filibustering. Pence consistently overran his time and refused to stop when cautioned.
Kaine would have done much better to not interrupt during the 2-minutes spot, but as soon as Pence's time was used, he should have said "Am I allowed to speak tonight?" and comments to that effect.
In the end, it doesn't really mean anything. Unless the VP candidate is bat-dung crazy like Sarah Palin, these debates just don't matter.

(11,816 posts)He's everything wingnuts love and I loathe: smug, self-righteous and authoritarian.
Having said that, I wasn't thrilled with Kaine's interrupting or his high-strung demeanor. Great content mastery, though.
And they both were trying too hard to repeat their "zingers". If Pence said "feckless" one more time I thought I was going to throw up.

(40,216 posts)that although Pence looked good, he was full of shit and threw Trump under the bus.

(15,370 posts)saw, Kaine won. He did exactly what he had to do.
The media wants a horse race - we all know that. But when the fact checks and debate-clip-inspired ads come out, the Clinton-Kaine ticket will show as a clear winner in spite of what the media take may be.

According to Time, the 2 most mentioned things on social media last night were Trump's relation with Putin and nuclear weapons. I searched the transcript for those terms and found:
The word "nuclear" was used 37 times, almost always by Kaine in pointing out Trump's scary-cheerful expectation for vast nuclear proliferation and Hillary's role in stepping down Iran's nuclear. Pence used it 3 times to deny.
The name "Putin" was used 25 times, same as above to underline Trump's admiration for dictators.
Viewers noticed and thought.

(15,370 posts)and empty suit, IMO, whatever others may think. He almost always turned the question to what he wanted to say without ever really answering it and he lied time after time. After time.
The moderator was terrible, IMO.
But whatever I think is beside the point. As you say, Kaine did what he had to.
As someone else noted somewhere, almost everything Pence said can be disproved either by his own or Trump's words and there are tons of attack ads to be made from them. But I can't really think of anything that Kaine said that can be used as an attack ad against the Dem ticket. And the steady trickle of words like "nuclear" will take their toll.

(4,187 posts)It's rude and condescending. I'm not sure who found Pence "likable" besides the MSM talking heads who are still desperate to make this into a horse race. I found Kaine much more human, and therefore much more likable.

(58,785 posts)Agree with BluePat also that he's phony as hell, yet another extreme religious/social conservative who has to lie about his agenda because most would oppose it.
That said, smart analysts believe Pence did a very good job of selling himself to big hard-right donors as a 2020 candidate. Looked at that way, a Vox writer believes he did everything he needed to and did it well.

(19,095 posts)He clearly won the 2nd half, but Pence won the first half.
Onto Sunday now.

(144 posts)Better that they give the win to Pence now. This will free them up to be more objective on sunday.
