2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDon't care who won a close VP debate. I care who beat up the opponents Presidential
candidate more effectively. That's the point of these VP debates.
And Tim Kaine clearly won on that score.

(1,124 posts)going in for the kill so to speak. Trump try to say the things Pence said tonight but he'll be in a town hall setting and Hillary will get him flustered as she calls him out on his lies. Kaine also had a great line when Pence kept trying to say Trump had paid millions in taxes. Kaine said how do you know ... there's no proof because he hasn't released his taxed ... how do you know?

(4,490 posts)Kaine did the job of making Clinton look better than Trump, while Pence focused on making himself look better than Kaine. The "winner" of the VP debate really doesn't mean a whole lot. The more important thing from the debate was making sure Pence couldn't just cleanly pile on to Hillary Clinton with the usual lies, while also drawing attention to the stark contrast of Clinton and Trump and their suitability for the job.
I thought Kaine was pretty effective in showing how amateur hour Trump is when Pence said "Look, he's not a polished politician" and really couldn't take his defense any further when Kaine brought up punishing women. I see that small bit getting a lot of play, and is a perfect quote for twitter. People will remember two things about the debate. Kaine interupting early, and Pence throwing Trump under the bus. One of those is much more important to the 2016 election than the other.
