2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWe've got two pretty good candidates in Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine, REC if you agree.
She is a policy wonk that committed her life to helpiing families and children. She can talk intelligently on economics, national security, health care, campaign finance reform, entitlements, civil liberites/rights and equality, combatting terrorism, debt-free college, criminal justice reform, and so much more: https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/ She also has oodles of experience in public service!
He is also policy wonk that committed his life progressive causes. He is an optimist that believes in government working to solve real issues. He did missionary work before he went into politics. He is a man of strong faith as is the lady at the top of the ticket.
There is no comparison on resume, knowledge, experience and accomplishments between the D party ticket and the R party ticket. We have the superior ticket on all of those measures.

(40,416 posts)Just like Barack and Joe, who complement each other so damned well. That can make for a productive relationship. We've seen an instance of this with the extraordinary breaking the LBGT issue by Biden and the obvious immediate agreement by Obama. Nobody can say whether that was planned, but when two people are in synch, it really doesn't matter. The result was amazing.
I think the same about Hillary and Tim. They will likely be working in synch on day one. And like Biden, I would expect Kaine to be pulling his load. They will have to. The house will be against them, and -- shudder -- just maybe the senate (if not in January, maybe in two years).
Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine are going to be a great team. And BTW, both Biden and Kaine rolled 18 on charisma, so Obama and Clinton also have that going for them. (Although I don't think there will be articles in the Onion about Tim Kaine washing his TransAm in the White House driveway.)
So, yup! We've got a great team.

(40,416 posts)Gerrymandering. And furthermore, unless we do something about state legislatures (also Gerrymandered) and governorships the GOP may have a lock on the US House of Representatives for another decade starting in 2020. We are in big trouble on this. If Democrats continue to stay home for off year elections, there is little hope there.
That is the reality of the issue.
The only solution is to convince Democrats to vote in every election, and for every office, which right now they do not do.
We'll likely get the US Senate, although that is looking too damned close, but no US House this time.

(15,262 posts)A wave election can overcome the margins. Some of the gerrymandering left Republicans susceptible to a wave election. Some have very different demographics today, as does the entire electorate. Just turning out young voters is a huge difference while a lot of old conservative voters, to put it politely, have retired from voting.
All we need to do is turn out the voters, they are there. I'm still hoping this becomes Bernie's new campaign, taking the House.

(40,416 posts)And if we don't do something about the governorships (not Gerrymandered) and the state legislatures (heavily Gerrymandered) our problems are not going to go away.
Those are the indisputable facts.
We need to make rather large changes in how we approach this. Focussing nearly solely on the POTUS election does absolutely nothing to effect those changes.
We need to focus more on local offices or we will remain behind. That's an indisputable fact as well.
Coyotl
(15,262 posts)or a false perception that there is no focus on local elections. The indisputable fact I will concede is that Dem voters stayed home for the mid-terms. But, we have more voters, that is indisputable fact too, and the split trends in our favor. Also, the next election that dtermiones who draws district lines after the census is a Presidential election, one where our voters will be turning out for the incumbent Hillary Clinton.

(865 posts)and of course I am not pushing anything on any DUer and am not claiming to read the minds or hearts of these two candidates:
Hillary Rodham Clinton is Methodist, regularly involved all her life. During her teen years, a Methodist minister was influential, took her and other youth at church on trip to see & hear MLK.
Tim Kaine is Catholic, also regularly involved all his life. He took a year off from law school to go on mission trip to Honduras. That is where he became so fluent in Spanish, by the way.
Well, that's a very brief summary.

(865 posts)Barack Obama used to be with United Church of Christ (different from Church of Christ, UCC more like Prebyterian USA and Methodist in social, other views). But he & family have been, I think, going to African Methodist Episcopal church in D.C.
joe Biden is Catholic.

(8,000 posts)Their religions have led them to do good for others. Hillary in advocating for children, families, health care and education while Tim Kaine did missionary work and learned to be fluent in Spanish, then came back to the US to help minorities in housing discrimination cases. They are both religious left which means doing good and keeping it out of government regs.

Everybody's a different kind of Christian....wellllllll, not everyone's a Christian! I'm a Buddhist, but I think those of us who aren't genetically conservative, brainwashed, psychopathic or other cluster D personality disorder share the same core values: Honesty, concern for others and the planet...
Separation of church and state, yeah that was a good idea. We need to get back to that.

Well, shit.
I don't need a President to make me warm and fuzzy. I'm not a 6 year old kid. I'm an adult.
I want the person who is the smartest mother****** in the room.
Hillary is that person for this election.

She's everything sexist morons hate, extremely intelligent, tough, principled, caring and...this is important...compromising when compromise is wise.
I am very pleased with her relationship with the current President, which shows a lot of class, on both sides. Their relationship started out badly, but they have both benefited - and our country has benefited - with their ability to bury the hatchet and become good friends and working partners.
