Related: About this forumHarry Belafonte Is Really Concerned About Trump Supporters
Its not The Donald, its his supporters who scare him most.
The legendary entertainer appeared on Saturdays episode of CNN Newsroom with Fredricka Whitfield and shared his thoughts on the election season, including his concern over Donald Trumps number of supporters.
I think America sits at its most critical space Ive every known our country to be, he said to Whitfield. I think its one thing to flippantly dismiss Donald Trump as some phenomena or some peculiar phenomena. I think Americans think of him very seriously. Im not as concerned about him and the distortions of his character, as I have about the fact that obviously 13 million people have declared themselves committed to his ideology, and committed to his philosophy. Thats a big number.
When asked what impact he thinks the election will have on the current climate, Belafonte summed it up when he said theres no ambivalence between the ideologies of the two candidates.
Welp. Hes right about that.

(8,000 posts)Some of his supporters are like cult members and are so delusional that we may see a jump in white nationalist style violence.

(83,773 posts)Hard to believe 13 million people are so full of hate. That won't change one iota after a Trump loss, may even ramp it up.

(83,773 posts)I worry for her as I worried for Obama. I always tried not to voice it.

Somehow, we have to deal with it.
I keep going back to John Dean's book, Conservatives Without Conscience where he takes apart and interprets the GOP under the rubric of the authoritarian personality as documented by Bob Altemeyer. Yes, it is that John Dean, of Watergate fame. He is a rather brilliant guy, and is no doubt a Hillary Clinton supporter. That book is one of the best political books I've read in many decades. I bought it when he came to speak when I lived near LA. I found him to be a rather soft spoken and gentle person. He signed my copy and he spoke with me briefly. As the line was long, I didn't want to take too long. I wouldn't mind having lunch with him sometime, though. Not going to happen. Keith Olbermann often had him on Countdown. I can recommend the book, though.
Always glad to interact with you, she.

(24,566 posts)are angry, easily riled, and armed. That is not a healthy combination. Many will see Hillary's election as a one-two punch coming after President Obama, and they may well decide they are not going to take it anymore. Scary times for sure.
