2016 Postmortem

wouldn't you think the Trumps would've had Ivanka's buck teeth fixed?
That was my bad self.
What I really wanted to say is that I don't think the new Trump ad featuring his gorgeous daughter is going to win him any votes and may in fact turn off a lot of women who might otherwise be considering voting for him. I'm a regular old middle-class housewife, and I think she's absolutely beautiful, but:
She talks in this snooty upper-class accent
Every time she says "my father" or "I'm an entrepreneur" you don't think of someone who has succeeded despite the obstacles women face in the business world, you think of a spoiled rich girl, apple of her father's eye, who is set for life simply because of the accident of her birth--and her children and their children will be set for life if the estate tax is abolished
She is beautiful in a cool, graceful way (after giving birth to three children!) that most of us can only dream of attaining, and so we (I) hate her in spite of myself.

(12,904 posts)I kind of feel sorry for her. What a horrible father she has!
I saw her dumb ad yesterday, and try as she might, she didn't convince me that her father gave the least crap about making women's life better, hers included.
She's kind of pretty, in a plastic-y kind of way, but I don't get any sense of warmth or emotion from anything she says.

(113,065 posts)implants. She would be conscious of what her father considers to be perfection and that included larger breasts.
Compare photos of her face at 12 - she has had a chin implant, nose job, and a brow lift. None of these procedures, including the breast implants are horrible, on their own, but, done in the context of her father's VERY PUBLIC preference for beauty and large breasts ( a flat chested woman cannot be a 10), I find it sad and disturbing.

(231 posts)I don't know why I hadn't considered that she was surgically altered, but of course she would be. If she were not so privileged, I would have compassion for her situation, but given that she has virtually every opportunity in the world open to her, I will continue to wallow in my un-sisterly dislike and slightly softened envy.
I think that the fact that, as you point out, she has been crafted to be her father's ideal of feminine beauty, and he clearly thinks she's smart, would make her what Trump et al. would believe to be the woman every woman would want to be and thus the perfect spokeswoman for his "woman" programs. I think this is going to backfire big time.

(28,341 posts)She's thoroughly altered herself and now fits that razor, placticine, cartoon boobie look her daddy seems to favor so much.
They even gave her that narrowed cat-eye thing that Melania has.
I had no idea.
Thanks so much for posting this.

(146,317 posts)to the Trump camp. Your opinion of how Trump's daughter "looks" is completely irrelevant to anything about this election, in my opinion.

(231 posts)being a fairly unattractive person myself, but the use of his daughter in a campaign ad seems to me to make her looks fair game. Do you chide every poster who refers to Donald as a cheeto?

(146,317 posts)When you comment about the appearance of a woman you dislike, you're commenting on all women. We don't do that here on DU, as a rule. But, it's your choice, I suppose.
mothra1orbit
(231 posts)I'm curious as to why you don't feel calling Donald Trump a Cheeto is just as objectionable--or perhaps you do?
And I do agree that commenting on looks, male or female btw, is unbecoming to a Democrat, but then I think calling the Trump sons Uday and Qusay while hilarious is also offensive. Not to mention the Children of the Corn comments.
I defend my comments about Ivanka only because I believe that if she were not beautiful she would not be used as she is, as a sort of surrogate Mrs. Donald Trump, in this campaign. She has made major speeches, policy speeches, on behalf of her father, speeches I would think the candidate himself should be making. She has been put before us as integral to the campaign, and it is my belief that her looks have a lot to do with that.

(156 posts)That calls women pigs I think her altering her looks surgically should be very much within the conversation
She has options. She can choose not to be a public face and surrogate wife for her father. She can choose not to change her looks. She can choose not to support a sexist racist pig.
She is not beyond reproach until she condemns her father's words and actions. And she never will so she is merely a trump surrogate and is actively supporting racism, sexism, nationalism and screwing over people poorer than herself. She has chosen as an adult to support her father's disgusting behaviour. As a woman she should be ashamed. She won't be.

(146,317 posts)It's really not something that is acceptable on DU. I realize that you are new to this website, but criticism based on looks is misplaced here.
Criticize views, opinions, and behavior, but leave people's appearance alone, please.

(231 posts)whether this rule applies to men's looks as well. TIA.

(156 posts)Is not critising a womans looks. Critising her morales is not critising her looks. Critism her reasons for changing her apperance should be allowed
Taking a stance like this is not constructive to feminism. Allowing a standardised look of women that conforms to mens views is not healthy. Nor is not calling women out on that or shutting down those that do
Critising one women's looks insults all women. Really. I suggest you go on all the trump looks posts.
Women are not precious creatures that require protection. Ivanka is now a politician. Who has been created to look and act as her father's perfect woman. The whole idea of that is repugnant
