Related: About this forumNew York Times-HILLARY CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT
In any normal election year, wed compare the two presidential candidates side by side on the issues. But this is not a normal election year. A comparison like that would be an empty exercise in a race where one candidate our choice, Hillary Clinton has a record of service and a raft of pragmatic ideas, and the other, Donald Trump, discloses nothing concrete about himself or his plans while promising the moon and offering the stars on layaway. (We will explain in a subsequent editorial why we believe Mr. Trump to be the worst nominee put forward by a major party in modern American history.)
But this endorsement would also be an empty exercise if it merely affirmed the choice of Clinton supporters. Were aiming instead to persuade those of you who are hesitating to vote for Mrs. Clinton because you are reluctant to vote for a Democrat, or for another Clinton, or for a candidate who might appear, on the surface, not to offer change from an establishment that seems indifferent and a political system that seems broken.
Running down the other guy wont suffice to make that argument. The best case for Hillary Clinton cannot be, and is not, that she isnt Donald Trump.
The best case is, instead, about the challenges this country faces, and Mrs. Clintons capacity to rise to them.

(182,826 posts)Similarly, Mrs. Clintons occasional missteps, combined with attacks on her trustworthiness, have distorted perceptions of her character. She is one of the most tenacious politicians of her generation, whose willingness to study and correct course is rare in an age of unyielding partisanship. As first lady, she rebounded from professional setbacks and personal trials with astounding resilience. Over eight years in the Senate and four as secretary of state, she built a reputation for grit and bipartisan collaboration. She displayed a command of policy and diplomatic nuance and an ability to listen to constituents and colleagues that are all too exceptional in Washington.

(81,304 posts)AMAZING!
I'm always gobsmacked when I see some major news outlet echoing my own feelings (and the view of so many others, including those here). Sometimes I find myself thinking that we're just shouting into a thunderstorm and nobody can hear us. Write-ups like this tell me that sometimes WE can be - and have been - HEARD above that thunderstorm.
MOST gratifying.

(1,816 posts)For Trump. They know what he is like and have been watching his dealings for years.
I look forward to what they uncover in the coming weeks.
Hillary is a newcomer to NY, but Trump was born, raised and lives here.

(2,003 posts)I certainly didn't expect they'd endorse one this cycle. I don't think any reasonable person would.
I do predict Donald J. Trump receives the glowing endorsement of the National Enquirer and lukewarm endorsements from possibly the New York Post and maybe the National Review. And that'll be all.

(9,760 posts)best reason to vote for Clinton. The article does a good job of presenting a balanced view while highlighting key strengths.
In my view, however, Trump's negatives outweigh Clinton's positives by a huge margin.
I have my reservations about her, but to elevate Trump, the poster boy for all that decent men and women try very hard to teach their children not to be, to the office of President of the United States, would be to give every bully, cheat, and braggart the excuse, "Nothing wrong with my behavior, after all, over half the country voted for a guy like me to lead the country."
May as well do away with Kindergarten after that.

(12,448 posts)We can point out how dangerous Trump would be in the White House while emphasizing Hillary's many strengths. Simply put, one would be terrible for thee country, one would be very good for it.

(9,760 posts)believing this Trump thing. When did so many Americans start finding smirking, crass, cheating bullies presidential? I'm guessing reality tv and Dubya softened them up to it, but still--seriously America?!!

(3,635 posts)That is what people are missing about election.
Many presidents have moral failings on the job, but they at least try (or give the appearance of trying) to be good people.
There are no such pretenses with Trump, who is loud and proud about his corrupt and ugly values.
How do parents raise their kids to have manners, if the president is somone like Trump?
How does society even hold itself together, as the deplorables become emboldened to do as they please?
